I know most anime are created from manga or they could be the brain child of a studio. However, I know a few are also made from novels. Howl's Moving Castle, I believe, is adapted from a novel.
What I'm wondering is are many anime created from novels or other sources? What do you think are the chances of western works ending up as anime? Just curious.

It is, however, quite different from the original.
Many, such as this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, etc. Note that most of their novels were published by Kadokawa Shoten.

Howl's Moving Castle was based on a British young adult novel by Diana Wynne Jones.
I think there was also an anime based on Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea series. Also Highlander is coming out, and that's based on a western movie. So there are anime being made from western stories, just not many.

Witchblade was based on the US comic of the same name. I don't think anime has been based on American comics all that much, so it would be nice to see more of that. From what I've seen of Witchblade, it turned out quite well in my opinion.
dormcat mentioned quite a few, but here are a few more: The Twelve Kingdoms Vampire Hunter D Basilisk There have been many novel to anime adapatations, as dormcat said. This topic has only scratched the surface thus far. |

Kino's Journey/Kino no Tabi comes from a light novel. So does Shinigami no Ballad, Scrapped Princess, and... I believe Strawberry Panic too.
The new anime, Romeo x Juliet, is of course adapted from William Shakespeare's play. |

Very likely. As the Japanese tend to look at the West for sources. Often times, they wish to be more like the West. That fact alone tends to piss off the other Asians in the region.

I tend to like series based off of novels like Scrapped Princess, Boogiepop Phantom, Crest of the Stars, and Galactic Heroes, better than series based off of manga. They tend to move quicker, seem aimed at an older age bracket and are more concise. Of course on the other side of things I tend to shy away from series based off of video games for the opposite reasons.

I believe Mariamite and Strawberry Panic are based on novels, too. There's also Toei's anime version of The Little Mermaid.

Anime based on games. Let's not forget those. Particularly the Dating Sims or H-Games.

I know they made an anime out of the videogame Xenosaga, which was ok, and the afformentioned Highlander anime movie came from the Highlander movies/TV series (although not related in storyline, thats where the concept came from). Cant wait to see it either, looks pretty sweet.[/b]

Full Metal Panic!(Fummofu!? was based off of short stories) Zero no Tsukaima All of these were originally novels(or light novels) Kanon, Air, and Clannad were all Key visual novels. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni was a murder-mystery video game or something along thaose lines. I believe that the .hack series was originally videogames, but I am really not sure. |

Actually, Fate/Stay Night is technically classified as a visual novel, if I remember correctly. Also, there's TYPE-MOON's breakout work, Tsukihime. |
