Well, if she wanted to do androgyny and Shakespeare, Hamlet's right there for the taking. It would actually explain a number of things. "Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him, Horatio.." But Richard III? The play made him into a villain but the manga will make him into...
A victim, ok, I'm fine with that but either I don't understand the meaning of "androgyny" or else someone mistranslated transgender/hermaphrodite. Or perhaps I don't understand how a man looking effeminate is more tragic than Shakespeare's possible deformities, ranging from the bad leg to the hunchback. Is it fujoshi code? |

according to the author it's a "remix" version of Shakespeare's Richard III, so anything goes ;>
I read the first 50 pages and I personally think the hermaphrodite theme really suits the story and the character, the way it's depicted; a sort of yin & yang inner philosophical battle, very well orchestrated. I find it very intriguing, beautiful and chilling, in the best gothic[-like] manga tradition. Kaori Yuki would be proud. [PS: the publisher's introduction specifically states "hermaphrodite body" 両性具有の身] |
