Metropolis, Metropolis vs. World of Yu-Gi-Oh, Yu-Gi-Oh! I'm unfamiliar with both, but I like what I'm reading about Metropolis and the city's layers so it gets my vote. Group D-2 Kingdom of Honneamise, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise vs. World of Attack on Titan, Attack on Titan Kingdom of Honneamise Group D-3 Anno Domini Timeline, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 vs. Japan 2113, Psycho-Pass Japan 2113 is a great creation. This vision of Japan's future is that of an extremely structured world in which a computer system called SYBIL analyzes your potential, and gives back to you scores representing your aptitude for areas of work. Based on these scores you are given a rank (A,B,C etc) that will determine the course of the rest of your life. Psycho-Pass goes in depth into how criminals are determined and caught when a person's psyche can be summed up in a number and a color. Latent Criminals, people who have never committed a crime but whose Crime Coefficient (probability of breaking the law, determined by the SYBIL System) is too high, are locked up and monitored 24/7. Police no longer carry guns, and instead use Dominators (a unique type of gun that can only be fired at a criminal or latent criminal), and are encouraged to just trust the SYBIL System and fire when told. Group D-4 World of Katanagatari, Katanagatari vs. Japan 2030, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex franchise Japan 2030 Group D-5 World of Natsume’s Book of Friends, Natsume’s Book of Friends franchise vs. Saubure, Gosick I've seen and love both but there is no doubt in my mind Saubure should win.
The politics in this show and the wealth of legends of Saubure come together to really make this country feel real. Natsume's Book of Friends has superb storytelling, but the one thing I've wished with that show is that it would gives a bit better picture of the world. Dang it, I want to know more about the exorcists! But we know very little, which makes sense since Natsume himself knows next to nothing about them. In this tournament its focus on characters hurts it. Group D-6 Setting of Tears to Tiara, Tears to Tiara vs. Italy, Gunslinger Girl franchise Italy Group D-7 23rd Century Sol System, Geneshaft vs. Daikuuriku, Simoun I read Geneshaft's writeup and the worldbuilding in its 23rd Century Sol System sounded very impressive, so it has earned my vote. Group D-8 Universe of Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Muyo! OVA continuity vs. Dustbin, Scrapped Princess Tenchi Muyo Universe |

A monarchy at the beginning of 20th century in Europe is nothing exceptional or strange. There are European countries that are monarchies even now: Belgium, Sweden, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Monaco, the Vatican City, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands and of course the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. |

Metropolis, Metropolis vs. World of Yu-Gi-Oh, Yu-Gi-Oh! Voting for Metropolis, Metropolis Group D-2 Kingdom of Honneamise, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise vs. World of Attack on Titan, Attack on Titan Voting for Kingdom of Honneamise. Seen both. I'm probably going against the popular choice here, but there are many questions unresolved in AoT and therefore the World Building feels incomplete to me. What sucks me into the show is the drama and the coolness factor but not necessarily the world building. Yes, its cool that there be titans, and its cool that there be spidermen that climb the sides of buildings and giant trees. But why are there titans, and why? Why? Why? Lots of questions about the world and how it works but not many answers yet. This is not the fault of the show as many things are being kept a mystery and I'm sure they will be revealed in a future season. This is not the case for RSF--I believe in the world much easier--the premise convinces me of its reality. The RSF is not the best of the best nor are the members like the people in the movie "The Right Stuff". Instead it seems to be made up of goofballs, failures and outcasts. However, its not presented that way to be a comedy instead its part of the setting. The country of Honneamise has problems with decadence and corruption. The RSF serves as both a pet project for a few true believers in a space program, and also as a means to get government contracts from the Royal Family. It is also being used by the military to incite a border clash with their neighbors. The politics and mythology of the world has an effect on the characters and what happens to them. It also doesn't hurt that there are interesting art designs for the cultures. As a result it feels much more complete and against AoT it gives it the edge for me. Factory, City, Mythology. Group D-3 Anno Domini Timeline, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 vs. Japan 2113, Psycho-Pass Voting for Japan 2113, Psycho-Pass. I've seen Gundam stuff in the past, and while it was fun it never really made that strong of an impression. I can't really recall much about any of it. As far as Psycho-Pass...well let me be clear that I don't like the show. However, I nominated it because I thought that the world building in spite of the story was fairly significant and asked important questions. As far as this vote Psycho-Pass gets it because the setting was far more memorable to me than Gundams. Group D-4 World of Katanagatari, Katanagatari vs. Japan 2030, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex franchise. Voting for Japan 2030, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex franchise. The thing about GITS is that it succeeds in the sense that the characters feel like they inhabit their setting. Perhaps it feels more natural because it has a police procedural quality to it at times. Group D-5 World of Natsume’s Book of Friends, Natsume’s Book of Friends franchise vs. Saubure, Gosick Voting for World of Natsume’s Book of Friends, Natsume’s Book of Friends franchise Group D-6 Setting of Tears to Tiara, Tears to Tiara vs. Italy, Gunslinger Girl franchise. Voting for Italy, Gunslinger Girl franchise. I saw roughly about 1/2 of Tears to Tiara before dropping it. There were some awkward info dumps. The "you know, that I know, that you know that we can't have a king if you have my sister", kind of thing. The sea elf who gets her clothing burned, so according to her "culture" she can't return to her homeland and she has to marry the guy who accidentally burned her clothing. The laws of the tribe which were also played up bit for comedy and so on. It just felt more like harem building than world building in the first half of the show. Maybe it got better later, but I wasn't impressed with the world building in the beginning. Now GSG traverses many different locales in Italy and we get to see the sights along with the cast. Places like Florence, Montalcino, Naples, Rome, Sicily, etc. It also contains Amati violins (considered equal to Stradivarius), salsiccia, gelato, The Carabinieri, Alfa Romeo Giulietta, paintings by Boticelli and other Italian elements. Someone was paying attention to the details. However, its not just for atmosphere or a modern locale, but a place that is supposed to evoke the tragic. In one episode several characters are talking about the opera Tosca to their different charges. "Tosca takes place 200 years ago when Rome is under a reign of terror." "All the main characters end up dead…the same thing happens in every Italian Opera. Murder, illness, revenge, suicide…Italians love tragedy. They are sentimental about everything, especially death. That is why our cities are filled with violence and vengeance. That is why every solution we devise is rooted in bloodshed." GSG mirrors the operatic setting as just like Tosca it too is filled with murder, illness, torture, death and tragedy. Friends become enemies, family and loved ones are murdered or leave. Young girls are turned into assassins and like all child soldiers they have no future. The technology of GSG also feels almost contemporary. The cyborgs have synthetic muscles and carbon fiber frames, but it is still a primitive technology with tragic consequences (spoiler[all the girls lifespans are shortened]). GSG is about characters that were created by their setting. The Spanish Steps at the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. Group D-7 23rd Century Sol System, Geneshaft vs. Daikuuriku, Simoun Voting for Daikuuriku, Simoun. I have not seen either but Simoun sounds interesting. Group D-8 Universe of Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Muyo! OVA continuity vs. Dustbin, Scrapped Princess Voting for Dustbin, Scrapped Princess |

Just realized that I hadn't voted yet this round. So let's get to business.
Group D-1 Metropolis, Metropolis vs. World of Yu-Gi-Oh, Yu-Gi-Oh! Haven't seen any compelling arguments for the Yu-Gi-Oh! setting and Metropolis is plenty good enough to win on its own. Its multilayered construction and unique look make it stand out in a crowd. Group D-2 Kingdom of Honneamise, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise vs. World of Attack on Titan, Attack on Titan The toughest pick this week for me. The AoT setting is a neat and fairly well-developed one that I could see beating many other competitors this week, but I think it is hurt by the mysteries at its core leaving an impression of an incomplete, and thus not yet fully-realized, setting. The Kingdom of Honneamise is, however. It is a spectacular example of taking elements from cultures from around the world and giving them an original twist. Everything - even the vehicles - looks somewhat familiar and yet distinctly different. This world is a marvel to look at, and it's one of the reasons why Wings of Honneamise is highly-regarded even by mainstream American movie critics. Group D-3 Anno Domini Timeline, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 vs. Japan 2113, Psycho-Pass What little I saw of Psycho-Pass, combined with some arguments made so far, has swayed me to the sdie of Japan 2113. Group D-4 World of Katanagatari, Katanagatari vs. Japan 2030, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex franchise Japan 2030, as this was always an incredibly imaginative extrapolation of where cybertechnology might lead us. Group D-5 World of Natsume’s Book of Friends, Natsume’s Book of Friends franchise vs. Saubure, Gosick Based on Tris8's arguments, Saubure. Group D-6 Setting of Tears to Tiara, Tears to Tiara vs. Italy, Gunslinger Girl franchise One-Eye, if you only saw the first half of TTT then you missed some of the strongest world-building content in it, as its world-building is at is best during the look into Arawn's backstory. That in particular is what swings this match in Setting of Tears to Tiara's favor, and as someone who has seen all of both series there's not the slightest doubt in my mind about which does the better job overall. I also disagree that the series ever info dumps in any significant sense. Group D-7 23rd Century Sol System, Geneshaft vs. Daikuuriku, Simoun Geneshaft's setting sounds interesting enough that I will have to put it on my "must see eventually" list. However, as original as it sounds it is going up against a brilliant and unique innovation in anime: a setting where everyone must either choose their permanent gender or have it chosen for them rather than be assigned by nature. That alone creates all sorts of fascinating possibilities that are explored in the series; after all, this is a setting where a character can say, "I'm going to be a man for you!" to her beloved and mean that literally. The religious and social issues the series deals with and the unique technology and designs further supports that case for Daikuuriku, which I think is one of the two or three strongest competitors in the first round. I can't recommend its source series strongly enough. Group D-8 Universe of Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Muyo! OVA continuity vs. Dustbin, Scrapped Princess Must ay that I'm a little surprised with how weak a showing Tenchi is making here, but I guess the franchise is normally too busy with the antics of its cast to get too much into the details of the setting, which always seems peripheral to anything else going on. Besides, Dustbin is no slouch, and the way it makes its title heroine "the poison that will destroy the world" when she turns 16 is rather clever. |

Metropolis, Metropolis vs. World of Yu-Gi-Oh, Yu-Gi-Oh! World of Metropolis Group D-2 Kingdom of Honneamise, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise vs. World of Attack on Titan, Attack on Titan World of Attack on Titan I have to give this to Attack on Titan for the sheer amount of detail that has gone into the creation of this world. We still don't know everything about the setting, but through that confusion, we understand what the people in the world itself experience. Group D-3 Anno Domini Timeline, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 vs. Japan 2113, Psycho-Pass Japan 2113 Group D-4 World of Katanagatari, Katanagatari vs. Japan 2030, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex franchise Japan 2030 Group D-5 World of Natsume’s Book of Friends, Natsume’s Book of Friends franchise vs. Saubure, Gosick World of Natsume's Book of Friends I love Gosick, but I don't think Saubure is a very good candidate so much is left out of the worldbuilding of Saubure and not a lot of of it really comes together in the story telling. Most of the show focuses on the relationship between Victorique and Kujou and through their relationship we don't actually learn to much about the country in depth. Group D-6 Setting of Tears to Tiara, Tears to Tiara vs. Italy, Gunslinger Girl franchise Italy Group D-7 23rd Century Sol System, Geneshaft vs. Daikuuriku, Simoun Daikuuruki Group D-8 Universe of Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Muyo! OVA continuity vs. Dustbin, Scrapped Princess Dustin |

Metropolis, Metropolis vs. World of Yu-Gi-Oh, Yu-Gi-Oh! seen Yu-gi-oh, but the description and everyone's argument for Metropolis means that's what I'm voting for Group D-2 Kingdom of Honneamise, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise vs. World of Attack on Titan, Attack on Titan Attack on Titan Group D-3 Anno Domini Timeline, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 vs. Japan 2113, Psycho-Pass Psycho Pass Group D-4 World of Katanagatari, Katanagatari vs. Japan 2030, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex franchise GITS has a very well built world and Iit's hard to see how anything can beat it. GITS:SAC Group D-5 World of Natsume’s Book of Friends, Natsume’s Book of Friends franchise vs. Saubure, Gosick Saubre Group D-6 Setting of Tears to Tiara, Tears to Tiara vs. Italy, Gunslinger Girl franchise Italy Group D-7 23rd Century Sol System, Geneshaft vs. Daikuuriku, Simoun seen neither, so it's a tos up and vote goes to Simoun Group D-8 Universe of Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Muyo! OVA continuity vs. Dustbin, Scrapped Princess[/quote] Tenchi Muyo |

Metropolis, Metropolis vs. World of Yu-Gi-Oh, Yu-Gi-Oh! Choosing: Metropolis Group D-2 Kingdom of Honneamise, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise vs. World of Attack on Titan, Attack on Titan Choosing: Kingdom of Honneamise Group D-3 Anno Domini Timeline, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 vs. Japan 2113, Psycho-Pass Choosing: Japan 2113 I got rather frustrated with Psycho-Pass and just stopped watching about halfway through, but that was primarily on the villain's philosophy and a few other things; the world-building was pretty amazing. Group D-4 World of Katanagatari, Katanagatari vs. Japan 2030, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex franchise Choosing: Japan 2030 Katanagatari's big problem here is that it doesn't really get into the meat of what the write up points out as deviations from appropriate technology level until very near its end. It's far more driven by the characters than the setting. Group D-5 World of Natsume’s Book of Friends, Natsume’s Book of Friends franchise vs. Saubure, Gosick Choosing: World of Natsume's BoF Group D-6 Setting of Tears to Tiara, Tears to Tiara vs. Italy, Gunslinger Girl franchise Choosing: Italy Group D-7 23rd Century Sol System, Geneshaft vs. Daikuuriku, Simoun Choosing: Daikuuriku Damn, this is a difficult choice. I haven't seen either, but both seem incredibly intriguing and elaborate. Group D-8 Universe of Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Muyo! OVA continuity vs. Dustbin, Scrapped Princess Choosing: Dustbin |

Through their case with the ghost ship, the Queen Berry, we learn some of the history of the world. We learn that this alternate timeline also had a World War I and that this small country of Saubure just survived The Great War through the help of the Allied Forces (of which it was a part). We get beautiful views of Library Tower and St. Marguerite Academy. You can even see mountains in the background, as they are supposed to be near the Alps. Library Tower and Victorique: St Marguerite Academy: From the SpringTime Reaper case, we learn how rare it is for people in Saubure to have dark hair and eyes. From the Cannibal Department Store case, we get views of an early 1900s department store. From every case we get a good look at culture. But the case we learn the most history from, not just culture, is most definitely the case of Queen Coco Rose and the Philosopher's Stone. The true history of the late Queen is revealed. This isn't the strongest contestant but Natsume's Book of Friends is very weak when it comes to world-building. Gosick definitely at least matches it when it comes to visuals and surpasses it with creating a backdrop for its story. |

Round 1 Group D is now closed.
16 votes in and a couple of tight matches led to our first two ties of the tournament, as well as our first sweep: D-1: Metropolis scored a Flawless Victory on World of Yu-Gi-Oh, 16-0. D-2: Kingdom of Honneamise and World of Attack on Titan deadlocked at 8-8. D-3: Japan 2113 dominated Anno Domini Timeline, 12-4. D-4: Japan 2030 destroyed World of Katanagatari, 14-2. D-5: World of NBOF and Saubure struggle on at 8-8. D-6: Italy eventually overcomes Setting of Tears to Tiara, 10-6. D-7: Daikuuriku sank 23rd Century Sol System, 12-4. D-8: Dustbin swept by Universe of Tenchi Muyo, 12-4. D-2 and D-5 were neck-and-neck the whole week; neither side ever had a lead of more than two votes. D-6 had a similar progression until Italy took the final four votes. 23rd Century Sol System hung close for a while in D-7 but got steamrolled in the end. The others were never close. So those ties should make things very interesting next round, especially in D-13, where NBOF and Saubere will square off against Gaea, a setting that did get a bye but hardly seems capable of dominating this match. D-10 could even be interesting, too, as I suspect that outcome was a worst case scenario for the LoGH setting. But it's a stronger candidate, so we'll see. Now onto Round 2 and some seeds now entering the mix! |

Hmm, probably should've voted last round, because I would've picked Honneamise for sure. But both Dustbin and Daikurikuu are going on, so that's good! Wasn't sure if they were up against more popular series.
Since I don't think we have to justify yet on everything this round, I'll not bother with the first two, which are pretty much going to be explained by everyone else and are a bit hard to describe in my sleep deprived mind. A-1: Twelve Kingdoms A-2: Mushishi A-3: Stern Bild City Only seen half the series, can't wait to see the second half, but part of the superhero TV show helps to show the culture of the city and not just its unusual construction (though that comes in by the end of the first half too). Though it may be populated by idiots, only one person in the city wears an outfit as awesome as Kotetsu's, his "mask" off duty disguise does less than a Digidetined's goggles (not counting Tai who once used them in a sandstorm), not to mention that you don't see people walking around with facial hair like his. A-4: France Just because it's historical doesn't mean it didn't absolutely suck me in. I'm probably in the minority, but Aqua didn't really add much for me. It was Space Venice, but I felt its purpose was to be a virtual vacation to wow me, rather than to suck me into the story and characters as France does in Rose of Versailles. For me, Aqua was like seeing someone else's Venice vacation photo album in Facebook. A-5: Land of the Beast Gods I can't say that I like the series/movie of either choice, but at least I remember the setting of Princess Mononoke, which is more than I can say for Code Geass. A-6: Paradigm City So, I've seen like 4 eps of Le Chevalier and the OP and adult swim/Toonami ads for The Big O, and Paradigm City is just oozing atmosphere and where Versailles succeeded at France, Le Chevalier does not. Seriously, just the ads and OP are enough to make me pick Big O (though I do hope to see it someday), though Le Chevalier not being that good doesn't help. A-7: Amberground I'm actually reading the manga right now (I've been hoarding them unread for a while and am rectifying this), and the more I learn of the world, the more fascinated I am by it. It's unique sort of fantasy, it's not just pure desert or pure poor world, and the light thing is slowly becoming more sinister and important, I love uncovering the world as I read! And I love the purple color scheme, can't say I've seen that everywhere. A-8: Macross Universe It takes place in a giant space ship for most of it! But I've also seen a good number of the side stuff, and it adds to the world, so it's more than just an awesome ship. But the awesome spaceship is indeed awesome and even if I were just going for that, that's fine too as I love see the whole society reassemble itself there. Macross city is totally rebuilt in that thing and neighborhoods get back together, restaurants open, gets its own idol, TV network, arcades, clothing stores, the whole setting is just living and breathing constantly (and I love seeing those three Zentraedi guys learn about the setting). I kind of want to live there, honestly. |
