Since when is Pokemon dead?
Sure, there isn't the hype about it anymore, but anyone who gets Game Informer knows that Pokemon Sapphire and Ruby was in the top five for *MONTHS.* I mean, like three months or more. As of June (the latest issue's statisitics), it was *still* #6 and #7. And the card game, as I hear it, is still one of the top card games. Maybe they have a very loose definition of "dead." |

Agreed. Pokemon is by no means dead. Sure, its not as popular as it once was, but it is not dead. How can it be dead when there are still new episodes airing on KidsWB every Saturday, a 6th movie being shown in the Japan, and quite a few new games (Leaf Green, Fire Red) coming out in the near future? Pokemon has been around since 1996, and it really wasn't popular until a few years later. Those who considered it to be a fad lost interest, but the true fans continue to live on. Once everything is gone, no more new episodes, no more movies, games, cards, anything...only then will Pokemon truely be dead.

Not even then will Pokemon die. As long as there are still people out there, including myself, who appreciate everything that Pokemon has brought to the world and to our own lives, it will live on in our hearts forever. And yes, I got wonderfully cheesy morals like that from Pokemon, too. ^^ It's my favorite frickin' anime series, for crying out loud. |

Did he get grant money for this? Because I could use some grant money to paint my walls... I mean, study the effect of year old paint on infants?
In any case, yeah, Pokemon is far from dead. While I've never been one for the TV show, I've been a fan of Pokemon since it's US debut (5 years ago or so, IIRC). Actually, I don't think the hype of Pokemon has ever really faded, it was the hype of the TV shows and the toys that faded. The Video Games, and, to a lesser extent, the TCG, are still up there. When Ruby/Sapphire came out, they sold something like two million units (together) in the first week or two, if I remember my facts right. And I'm betting the numbers will be just as high when Fire/Leaf, remakes of the original Red/Green, come out next year. (Mainly because you can't trade Pokemon from R/G/B/Y/G/S/C to R/S, and F/L will give people a chance to catch Pokemon you can't (legally) catch in Ruby/Sapphire.) Still, I'd be interested to read it. |

It's a lot less popular than what it was when it first came out near 1998.
For me, I don't watch much TV anymore because the majority of the shows that are aiming to teenagers just don't suit me (i.e. read:The American remake Yu-Gi-Oh). Not to mention boring, or a bunch of fad shows (read:Reality TV). |

I'd say that it's off by about three years. But seriously, I really think it's too early to say that Pokemon is dead. Ruby and Sapphire were just released earlier this year, and the tv show is still on the air. Pokemon may not be the thing it was a few years back, but it's far from dead.

While the new games have clearly not had the same blockbuster sales as some of the earlier games, Ruby/Sapphire have crossed the 10 million mark in units shipped and after this Christmas should easily be around 12 million or so worldwide. They've done 2.8 million in the US, 4.8 million in Japan and over 1.5 million in Europe in terms of sold through units.. hardly dead indeed.
Pokémon Collosseum comes out for GameCube in Japan on the 21st and will be the first console Pokémon with an RPG mode (not a full-fledged one, but theyre saying about 30 hours worth) alongside it's typical Stadium abilities.. I'm expecting it to do quite well there and when released in the US in 2004. It'll be compatible with Leaf Green and Fire Red as well. |

Yes, Wizards of the Coast quit making the Pokemon cards(though it wasn't their choice; they wanted to continue producing them), but Nintendo/The Pokemon Company are distributing the new sets instead. Wizards of the Coast was trying to sue Nintendo over the rights recently.

Heck, even in Japan, Pokemon's still living it large. I mean come on, it's perpetually #3 on the TV-Tokyo list, only after Naruto and Prince of Tennis. This week, it's beating #5 Yu-Gi-Oh as usual, which can't seem to catch up. (Who says Yu-Gi-Oh is killing Pokemon?!) The Pokemon reruns are #8, beating # 10 Rockman Axess. (No, I don't have anything against these shows. Their my faves!)
So no one, 'specially the anti-Pokemon fans, can really say that it's dead. It's thriving sufficiently in its homeland of Japan. Either this guy who's writing this "Academics of Pokemon" (sorry, I kinda skimmed the article) doesn't have a CLUE what he's talking about or, quoting sailor_titan "Maybe they have a very loose definition of "dead."" ...as in "Pokemon being dead is defined as it not being the number one rated show in the entire universe for an extended (a few years) period of time."
