I went to Kinokuniya for the first time around Christmas this year. They actually had a poster for the Death Note anime. I was surprised at how big the anime and manga section was (they had both import and English graphic novels and DVDs). They also had figures and wallscrolls if I remember correctly. They actually had a few drawings signed by SJ manga artists above the Japanese language graphic novels. I didn't actually buy anything for myself but I got my little brother a kendama

Wow, the current location is already huge. It's even bigger than the one in San Fransisco at the Japan Town center. I'll have to make another visit to NYC when it's done. I always like the selection of calendars they have right next to the entrance. I also miss the Japanese bookstore that used to be next to Grand Central. They closed down a couple of years ago

D: Now I have to go even farther for my daily Kinokuniya treck and in the opposite direction??! oy vey. but it'll be bigger. and it'll have a cafe. Life is looking good.

I'd go just for the 'service'  . I was in NYC just after Xmas (before new year thou) and that store was so crowded so I must say a move to a bigger store would be very nice.

You must mean Asahiya Bookstore. They didn't close, they moved, albeit to a much smaller space... Their selection of manga now blows. Hey, at least we still have Book Off. http://www.asahiyausa.com/store.html Great news about Kinokuniya, as it'll now be closer to where I work. Although I'll miss the old store. Mega-sentimental value to me. |

Cool. I'm happy that Kinokuniya is expanding, but it's already pretty big. But who cares, I'd like to sit down at a cafe. I love going there when I go into the city (I live in the NY suburbs). |

Book-off is a must-visit. Used tankoubon for $1, used art books for $3-10. Used R2, and CD's as well. It's on 41st between 5th and Madison (around the corner from the library). While you're in the neighborhood (and if it's near lunch time) visit Cafe Zaiya for awesome Japanese bakery goodness. It's just a few stores down. |

Book-Off is great. They have artbooks too though most are from games than animes but if you're lucky you might find what you want. They also have old VHS tapes from US and Japan. DVDs too though they have to pay in an all region DVD player. Don't get the one on sale there,it's exspensive and only does two regions. Get an All region player at Kim's on St. Mark's Place or B&H Photo on 34 & Ninth that plays any DVD on Earth. I miss Asahiya's hentai section. Out of this world!

=O Yay! Book Off and Kinokuniya are going to be closer to each other...I think. XD I have the worst sense of direction. (Only I can get lost trying to find the Grand street train station from Canal and Elizabeth, even when I walk there all the time. D:)
I wonder though, when are they moving? Did it say? |

Damn I wish I would of know this prior to my NY visit that way I could of at least gone there instead of waiting an hour for crappy ice skating in Central Park.....Also that Cafe sounds like it would of been fun, I ate at a bunch of places that weren't the price I paid....

Oh wow, they just moved? That's good. My friend lied to me. Actually I might have gone in there when I was last in NYC. I visited a small Japanese bookstore that had a pretty big magazine section. I was browsing through some of the J-rock and Goth/lolita magazines. |

Did you stay near the tourist areas? Those places are generally a rip-off, but as a whole NYC is absolutely full of amazing restaurants, many of which are very cheap. I've had a very difficult time keeping my weight down for that very reason. 
There are two places I recommend every Japanophile eat at while they're in town: Cafe Yokocho (near Saint Marks, but hard to find) offers pretty much every variety of Japanese street vendor food you can think of, from ramen to oden to tapas. The other is Kenka, which is on Saint Marks, which also has great food (except their ramen) and a ton of Japanese comfort food... but more importantly, it's all done up like a 70's yakuza hangout. The PA blares classical Japanese dance music, the walls are adorned with old pachinko machines and posters for 70's pink eiga, and the menu features rules including "All graffiti must be in Japanese" and sets a fine for throwing up. (The latter may occur, as Sapporo's are $1.50 each.) There's also a cotton candy machine for some reason.
Sounds like the place. The old store used to have a great manga selection and a decent selection of current J-pop/rock CD's. I miss those days... In fact, that's where I preordered the Escaflowne movie OST many moons ago. God, I can't believe I've only been in NYC for eight years. Feels like a lifetime. (In a good way.) |
