So they are finally proving that any type of race can be a lead character in their animated movies. A good approach, but it took this long. |

Yeah, she may be the first black one but there's been other races before so it's not really exploring new territory or demonstrating some great leap in civil rights. There are many other races than just caucasians and african americans.

I think the point being made there was that there has already been a sprinkling of racial diversity across Disney. |

At least they're making it somewhat believable. When I first heard the announcement I was worried that they were going to try a traditional European story, castles and knights and all, with a black princess shoehorned in. Since they're going with a more modern, western setting though, I think it's a good step, and as the article pointed out, the primary goal is so that when they make those "Disney Princess fair dream playground" toys they can make a black one too.

Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame was Roma (Gypsy) and the Emperor's New Groove was set in the Aztec era.
It seems like almost all other races have been done, so apparently Disney needs to have a black heroine to round out its multiculturalism, which is a good thing in my opinion. They also will now have a better way to market their princess line to African-Americans. And I know we all want Disney to succeed financially. ![]() |

Being a fan for Disney for so long, I'm very sure that Jasmine from Alladin was considered a Disney princess.. I have a Disney Princess cassette tape from my 3rd grade days that has her songs included..
Although she is not black, she is still not the usual princess that has light skin and blonde hair. The same goes for Pocahontas and Mulan. |

Not to nit-pick, but it's actually Aladdin. ^^; I could see a trend here and wanted to squash it before it got out of hand. Also, screw the ethnicity of the characters; as a total Disney kid, I'm just happy to hear about a new Disney 2D feature film! Now I can pretend the last three years (when the 2D studio was closed) never happened. |

It was a long time since Disney apply that race principle thing in their movies... I'm sure that Aladdin and Pocahontas was released in the late 90's... and Mr. Zac, yeah, what tend you to write Mulan was her Chinese Race(defending my race, hehehe)... But she isn't black... But I have to say, the earlier Disney Movies were more elaborate inthis fact and were much more applicable to reality... I can also give some female characters, not princesses, which has a dark complexion: There is Megara in Hercules, then Lilo, she was really emphasized as a Hawaiin girl, then there is the girl from Atlantis, gosh, i forgot her name? but nowadays, disney movies, is somewhat crappy. I didn't feel the essence of their work... I like the princesses days, when there was all these cute songs... (I'm sorry got a little overboard)... |

Lilo and Sttch? Emperor's New Groove?
However, if you're talking Blacks specifically, then there was the brilliant Song of the South and the umm... not briliant proud family. Alladin came out in 1992, and Pochahontas in 1995; Not the late 90s. ![]() I couldnt care less about her being the first Black princess. What interests me is the fact the co-directors of Aladdin and the Little Mermaid will be directing this one, so it just might be their best one in a VERY long time. |
