CNN reports, "Viacom sued Google and its online video subsidiary YouTube for $1 billion Tuesday, the first big lawsuit against the online video site and its parent for copyright infringement. Experts predicted more lawsuits to come. In addition to damages, Viacom said it wants an injunction prohibiting Google and YouTube from further copyright infringement. Viacom first demanded that YouTube take down videos from shows on Viacom-owned networks that were posted on the site without Viacom's consent. Google (Charts) bought YouTube for nearly $1.7 billion last year. Viacom is the first major media firm to sue Google and YouTube for copyright infringement. Other media companies, including GE (Charts)-owned NBC Universal, CBS (Charts), and Universal Music Group, have decided to partner with YouTube, the world's most popular online video site. But Viacom said that it decided to sue Google and YouTube "after a great deal of unproductive negotiation."
Aside from this dilemma, as many of you may or may not know; YouTube is of course known for their unrelentingly uploaded video clips of subgenres regarding media's ranging from anime to your next-door neighbor's liger, which is undoubtedly a cat who's wearing your mother's old school make up. So with that aside, what are your thoughts and opinions for this particular topic? Of course it's only natural to assume that YouTube will eventually get sued to death, considering that there are roughly 65,000 videos uploaded per 24 hours. Hmm, I come to ponder though; does this mean fansubs and fandubs, with the exception of AMVs, will finally cease to produce, or will maybe be monitored more strictly? Please feel free to comment or rant about the topic at hand. |

Well, youtube is only a minor distribution channel for fansubs. The meat of fansubs go through torrents.
This is only a political move - google don't want to give viacom ONE BILLION DOLLARS [said in evil genius voice], they'll likely come to an agreement to police youtube more strictly. In fact, viacom haven't even requested that google take down the copyrighted videos. |

I have no problem with Viacom (or any other company) protecting themselves if they want Youtube to take down entire episodes of their series. I think that clips (No longer then a minute or two) should be allowed....and in fact I would want people watching clips of my show to drive DVD sales. AMV are tricky because one they violate the animation studio property.....and then you have to deal with the music company attempting to protect the music. As always Youtube will crack down on a lot of videos and then over time more will eventually make their way back and then we get another letter threatening lawsuit. |

Here's the thread that has the article where Viacom originally demanded that they take those videos down a month ago. Doesn't surprise me that this is happening. Youtube is a big name out there right, but these problems will never go away since they're known for having that kind of materials. What can you do? I think Google put themselves in a bad position though when they bought Youtube. Now they're in the line of fire as well.

What I don't get is how some people seem to have dedicated their lives to uploading and reuploading entire episodes of shows that get taken down. Do these people have nothing better to do?

Well if they keep uploading stuff that the site has taken down, wouldn't they be in danger of getting their accounts banned? |

Apparently not, considering the amount of times you'll find the same people uploading the MoHS episodes....even though they were all suppose to be taken down sometime ago.
Personally I thought that Google buying Youtube would of been a good move. Giving youtube actually episodes of TV, (or at least better quality clips) and also Google needed to buyout Youtube.....they were being slaughter by them in the video market place. Also the advertisement is the cream of the crop with the ripe age of demographic that frequent the site. |

Youtube is kind of a silly place to actually try and get videos for that matter especially anime. I sort of understand mainstream titles like South Park, Grey's Anatomy, Prison Break, and anything shown during primetime on basic cable or national syndicate. What I don't get are people watching things like anime on youtube. For the first time in my entire life I accessed youtube for anime, because I was trying to see what Ikkitousen: Dragon Destiny would be like. My gripes about it are how bad the quality is, but not only the fact that they're in parts. I know that you can only upload a certain amount to youtubes video probably, but I mean having to find the other part to a 24 minute episode is silly. I think for anyone who watches anime on youtube is silly and I think they should look at either waiting for the license or the torrent. You at least get good quality through torrents and you don't have to find the other part for the episode your watching. I don't see the Viacom case as that big of a deal, because it's copyright infringement, while I don't see it setting the future at aiming towards things like anime, I do see things like South Park and Family Guy being pulled in the near future. What it will come down to is Google becoming an industry like Napster getting sued and will eventually go to a pay for viewing (subsciption). This doesn't set anything for anime though, anime is still in my opinion a medium growing industry. The problem I see with anime is the fact that while copyright infringement happens, it's to much of a hassle for certain international companies to deal with, plus there are to many international conventions placed out to make it easy for companies to sue fansubbing groups.

If you know who to get them from (these days it is harder to find them though) then quality shouldn't be a problem, also the parts are in links right under the vid or in the vid list on the right, again that is usally the case with the efficient uploaders. I use it to see how certain series are before I down load the rest of the series to save space. Yes the uploaders probably don't have much of a life but then again many of them are below the age of 18, they probably don't really mind since you can just leave your computer onwhile uploading and do other things so I don't think it really takes up alot of their time, have to say though there is no reason they should upload an already licensed series, that causes more problems, if people want to see licensed series then just download them off of a torrent or buy it...or both, but don't reupload it cause that will cause poblems. |

I had a dream once where YouTube was completely shutdown because of copyright. If they don't clean up their act, this dream might become a reality.

Even if Youtube were to get shut down, somebody would rise up from the ashes and take over where Youtube left off. I've seen plenty of video sites out there. What would make it big is that Youtube is a well known site, so getting it shut down would cause some problems/discomfort for people, but it wouldn't mean the end of the world. I don't think they will be shut down though. |

Yeah, wasn't the main theme to their website was to broadcast yourself? So probably what those who founded Youtube in the beginning had the idea that people were going to load up videos of what they took, not copyrighted materials, since those have already been made by somebody. I have yet to upload a video to Youtube though.
