Wrestling is involved, but it's more based on fighting UFC style and street fighting, except that it's a bunch of fighting styles put together. Wrestling, karate, judo, pro-wrestling, sambo, street fighting, boxing, kick-boxing, aikido, and many more. And it has a lot of references to famous fighters, past and present.

Baki uses "total fighting" as stated in the tournament arc. That states that he can use any style that he has learned.

For a similar question about a different series is Tough/Tekken really about shootfighting or another competitive martial art.

You could say shootfighting in a way. Kiichi seems to use the "miyazawa" style of whatever he, his dad, his uncle and his grandfather use in whatever martial art that they perform. People I guess come up with their own styles within an art, and name their own moves and such. It's not wrestling, I can tell you that.

Many forms of combat were used in the Baki series, not just wrestling.
