I realize that youre not allowed to ask for Anime recomendations, but I dont see anything about Manga and also this is sort of different so hopefully its okay.

I've been an Anime fan for a while, but I've never really gotten into Manga. Id like to though so can anyone suggest a good place to start? I've considered reading the manga of something I've seen but Id rather read something new.

I've seen and enjoyed:

Basilisk
Cowboy Bebop
Desert Punk
Fate/stay night
Full Metal Panic!
Fullmetal Alchemist
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
Neon Genesis Evangelion - good but the ending was terrible
Ninja Scroll (movie)
RahXephon
Samurai Champloo
Samurai Deeper Kyo
Trigun
Vision of Escaflowne
X

Something similar to these, something you recomend for a newcomer to Manga or just something you recomend...

I appreciate any responses.

Maybe Battle Angel Alita? It has a good futuristic storyline with lots of action and twists. Also involves motivation of the self and such. Hmm here! have a look Smile LINK!

It's a very good story and I believe Battle Angel Alita Last Order is a continuation.

Edit: One of the good things about the original Battle Angel Alita is that it's all released so you don't need to wait. As for the Last Order series, it's still being released and you wait quite a while for it. The original series comes to a ending that doesn't need much more explaining so it can be read alone Smile

They are not so strict on it here because you don't see it everyday in this forum. A lot more people watch anime than read manga, so that's probably another reason.

Judging by what you've seen, I would say that you're into mature and adventure titles. So, here's my go at it: I haven't seen or read too many of the titles you have listed, but I can say that Samurai Deeper Kyo is a pretty good series to go with, plenty of action, blood, and babes. I thought Full Metal Panic was okay, but the ending seemed to kind of drop the excitement that was going on with it. Trigun is worth a read, though the artwork gets a little messy and confusing at times. Titles that I have read that I can recommend would be:
Get Backers - really good series to enjoy, run in the same magazine in Japan as Samurai Deeper Kyo. So that would give you an idea of what to expect, pretty much the same kinds of things in Get Backers as I mentioned for SDK, and comedy to fill in any missing things.
Berserk - This title runs along the lines of serious title, but great action and artwork, as well as the story will catch you in to keep reading it.
These would be my recommendations.

If you liked the Samurai Deeper Kyo anime, give the manga a read. The anime was made when the manga was only about halfway done, if that, and compressing 20 volumes of anime into manga is never a good thing. Just be warned that its rather long (39 volumes) and Tokyopop has gone to a quarterly release rate, so it will be about another 5 years before they reach the end.

You should really look into all the Dark Horse manga titles, they seem like they would be of interest to you. I'd recommend Eden: It's an Endless World!, Hellsing, Berserk, and Akira. They also publish Trigun which you'll probably like if you're a fan of the anime. It's two volumes long and then continues in Trigun Maximum.

If you like the Basilisk anime you should give the manga a try too. It's faster paced then the anime and doesn't have the hokey flashbacks. Since you seem to like Gundam I'd recommend Mobile Suit Gundam: Ecole du Ciel. It takes place in UC 0085 and is, IMO, one of the best Gundam manga we've seen here.

I hope you find something you like. Good luck Very Happy

Now I just recently started to read manga and I started with shorter series.

I don't know if any of these relate to what you have seen, but i found them entertaining

- Kodocha: 10 volumes and it's really funny, and sad. The anime actually looks pretty crappy though
....and....
- Ultra Maniac: 5 Volumes and its about a witch girl and its really funny kinda like a romantic comedy but its not corny.

But since Im a girl I dont know if you would like them, even though i don't know your gender, but to me they seem more of a girls manga. I dont know im rambling Embarassed But they are very interesting and they always make you want to read more and im rambling again i have to stop.

Actually...I'm a Trigun anime fan and I don't like the manga. I think the art is terrible. That could just be me, though.

I second all of your recommendations, by the way...Berserk, Akira, and Eden are all absolutely incredible (Berserk's my all-time favorite manga), and Hellsing is pretty good as well.

Definitely check out Mushishi, the first book just came out, and it is amazing. (I'm already familiar with the story, before it came here). The style of story telling is comparable to Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo in that it is "episodic" by nature, and doesn't have a big overarching plot, but there is still a sense of direction. The artwork is very lush and most of the people that have read it (and/or seen the anime) including me, are very drawn into it. Heralded as one of the top manga/anime stories in Japan right now, I'd say go for it.

Rurouni Kenshin. A show featuring one of the most awesome stories ever made, and one of the best characters molded from the essence of the Lord God himself, Saito Hajime. Seriously, if there was only one manga I could recommend on one character, Rurouni Kenshin would win because of this man.

My tastes lean ALOT towards romantic shoujo manga wise so I'm not sure if you'd like what I like but I would like to reccomend Black Cat. It's in the Viz Shounen Jump line and has action, adventure and various bad guys that range from the laughable to the "okay, that modderpocker is frickin' CRAZY!!!!" And that particular person sometimes actually makes sense Confused

I'm enjoying it so far but it is a long series, 20 or more volumes.

If you want to try some shoujo titles, my personal favorites that I would suggest are Ceres, Fushigi Yugi/Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden, and Alice 19th. While these stories have comedy and romance in them, there is also a darker thread running through each. Oh, and they are all by the same person, Yuu Watase.

I hope that you find something that you will like!

Oh, I almost forgot! Tenjho Tenge. There is a lot of fan-service in this title but once you get past that, it's a damn good story! Especially the most recent volumes have had an excellent plot twist! Twisted Evil

The anime is a lot more hyper than the anime was. Sana was hyper and a little on the crazy side, but the anime pumps her full of caffeine and god knows what else. But its not bad, its just different. The anime also has some nice filler episodes that expand on some of the earlier events in the manga.

As for the manga, its great, but good luck finding it since its out of print.

Well from the anime that you've listed as enjoying I'd agree with what others have suggested, especially Hellsing and Berserk. Also you might try:

Death Note - A dark suspense filled manga, which pits two genius characters against each other as they attempt to outwit and eliminate one and other.

Claymore - This series isn't that far along in being translated yet, but so far I've found it to be fairly good. The premise is that female warriors known as Claymores hunt weird demon like creatures called Yoma, and the plot follows the hard and anguish filled lives of these huntresses.

I guess I'll also throw out a personal recommendation as well, for the two manga series that really got me interested in manga... although if you aren't into romance/harem plots you might not like them:

Love Hina - This was the first manga series I got majorly into because it was extremely funny and the plot manages to stay interesting throughout the entire series.

Negima! - This series is written by Ken Akamatsu the same guy who wrote Love Hina, but the plot is less harem oriented. This series has some good action sequences as well as romance; plus on top of that it manages to still be funny.

As a suggestion I'd say your best bet is to go to a book store and see if you can't find a couple of the series that sound interesting to you and read a bit at the book store to see if it is actually something you enjoy. Although some of these series might be wrapped in which case you'll have to buy a volume, but that's usually what I do when I'm starting a new series I pick up the first volume and read it to decide if I really want to read the series and if I like it I purchase more.

Since no one said it yet, you need to pick up death note on the double. Also monster and vagabond are two awesome titles that have been left out.

I've started in manga only recently, and I've done it two ways with pretty good results.

I picked up the Fullmetal Alchemist manga after enjoying the same series as an anime. In this case, the anime diverges from the manga partway through, so it was like reading new material.

Since manga and anime are often written by the same people, I've also followed mangaka/authors. Their works often have the same traits and a similar level of quality, so if you like one of their works you'd probably enjoy more. I saw Ai Yazawa's Paradise Kiss, so I'm also reading her Gokinjo Monogatari. I also watched Urazawa's Monster, so I'm reading his 20th Century Boys. And I'm very happy with both.
