Thank you, Key! You have just absolutely, positively cemented my decision of picking up this title. I pre-ordered it back in December and when the Le Chevalier Skin with free episode one appeared, I began salivating with anticipation for this. Now with what you've said, I'm almost quivering with anticipation.
I admit I haven't read all of the reviews that ANN has to offer but this is THE MOST positive review I've read in a while of at title that I'm interested in.
And, in fact, I just might show this title to my dad...once all of the volumes come out. I don't think it would keep his interest if I only showed him a few episodes every few months...even if he did grow up with the Saturday Movie Serials.
Excellent Review and thanks again!

Great review
I agree, this is a beautiful program (or at least what I've seen of it). I do wish ADV had waited long enough for a french to be produced and then do like they did in the EVA DVD releases. A bit of a shame indeed (especially so for those of us who speak French), but there is still much to enjoy about the show. Actually, my only issue with the entire program as I've seen thus far are the problems that both sets of actors seem to have with the french names and words. While some of the Japanese pronounciation was okay, there were still mistakes; same for the english. The biggest problem for me was when, though only on one occasion, D'Éon's name was pronounced as the name Dion (as in Stéphane Dion, the future prime minister of Canada) would be.

I have to say, I'm actually glad I skipped the fansubs on this series. Even if the English dub isn't perfect, it still sounds pretty good, and every other facet seems like it's high-quality. I'll have to add this one to the items I've had sitting in the cart at DDD for awhile.

The show just seems very artsy to me, in a good way. A nice break off from the mainstream. I really wanna get volume 1 now. I hope this show doesn't start strong and get weasker as it goes on.

I've watched a couple episodes and I liked it a lot. As the review said, the pacing was very good. This is on my list to buy - when (please not if) it get released in my country.

Thanks for the review, Key. Before it, I was languishing over whether to buy it the singles route, or just wait for a collection down the line. From the positive remarks you and others have given, plus what appears to be some very nice extras, my mind's made up. It's going into the singles pile. Now I just have to figure out how to tweak my budget to include it...

I'm still probably going to rent this title before I buy it (I love the preview of the first episode, I was just a tad worried about how much I'll enjoy the creepy cultish aspect or not), but every single thing I've heard about this series makes me want to check it out. It definately gets props for trying a setting and style distinctly different from other anime.

Quote: | Fully appreciating the intricacies and politics of the story being spun, as well as how clever it is, requires a good amount of knowledge about 18th century France, extensive use of Google, or a full review of the historical background provided in the Extras. |
It's encouraging to know that the script writers had done their homework to match up the historical accuracy, all I know of that period is from watching The Rose of Versailles, but it's nice that a background is included in the DVD to understand the setting a little better.
This is one series that I don't intend to get when it's released in boxset format considering ADV has a habit of deleting all the translator's notes in favor for fewer discs to fit into the boxset.

maybe i'm just nitpicking, but does anyone else have a serious problem with the accents? i mean the actors do a great job, but this show is about the French revolution and has a melting pot of characters... but everybody sounds exactly the same. it really kills the atmosphere.

Am I weird? A so-so review earlier didn't even make me doubt a show I am purchasing even a little, and now a good review confirms my suspicions to stay away from another. I have had little to no interest in this series but a couple of comments lately here and there were almost making me interested enough to purchase it. Thanks to this review I can now rest assured that this show is not worth my time. It just sounds like it's incredibly dull. Thanks for the help.

Although the series has had a lot of action in it so far, it's much more the kind of elegant displays seen in the Musketeer movies than the high-power and/or high-energy affairs normally seen in anime. If that's not your kind of thing, the historical aspects don't interest you, and/or you're more into the cutesy side of anime, then this is probably one you should skip, undeadben.
I'm glad to see that the review is getting others enthusiastic about the first volume for when it comes out in two weeks. That was my hope when I wrote it, as this is one worth getting enthusiastic about.

Exactly, when it comes to action I prefer high energy fast moving stuff. And for the non-action parts, I can sit through a slower paced show, even if it's not cutesy, when it is more of a shoujo or slice of life type of show but not in a historical based drama. And I have a passable knowledge of 18th century France, or at least I did several years ago in college mostly based on French literature, and I do enjoy History but for some reason primarily historical type shows, anime or otherwise, usually don't interest me much, they always end up looking a bit too pretentious and dull to me so I tend to stay away.
I hope you don't take offense, I wasn't knocking your review which was very helpful. I was just saying that you did help me know a little more about the show and that the show itself did not interest me.

Sounds positively excellent! I'll probably grab a fansub to check it out, and, if it's as great as everyone's been saying, go out and buy it. I've got high expectations!
