Of course they are only going to release 3 a year. It's one of their biggest sellers, so they are going to cash in on it for as long as they can. I hate that I have to wait, but business wise, it's a smart move.

Oh well. It is sad that this is how things turned out anime-wise. I loved the anime but after doing the research for my blog entry, the end is something I don't know if I'll be able to watch (the final episode mostly) again. I still love the anime for the most part though because it is mostly a well-done thing. Indeed, separated from the manga, it is a very good anime. However, comparing the manga to the anime, well that changes everything story-wise.

As to the manga, I'm disappointed that TokyoPop has slowed down the releases so that we only get three volumes this year.

I don't think I can stand to watch the last episode either. On top of that, I don't know if I can stand to watch the last arc itself. Three volumes a year, that's pretty much what Hanatoyume was doing when then were releasing the original Japanese manga. Every four months basically. Anyways, here's the e-mail reply I got from Funi:

John,

Thank you for the email. I am not involved in these discussions and I do not have any contact information for anyone who might be an "official" source, so any comment that I can provide would only be speculation. I can tell you that we are aware that there is a lot of support for Fruits Basket in the United States. If there are any new developments, rest assured that we will let you know.

Thanks again for the email.

AND, I haven't forgotten about you all, I just had a very long nine and a half hour day at work today, and now I will make the ever late announcement Wink

Welcome to Ritsu week!! Ritsu, spoiler[the man (?) who cannot go without apologizing for five seconds to the whole wide world. He is, obviously, a part of the ZOdiac, and is the Monkey. When we see him we can't help but to laugh at him being apologetic all the time, not to mention that he wears girls' clothes. On top of that, his interactions with other people just get off our feet until we die laughing. But like every Zodiac, Ritsu does have a dark secret, which he must confront with Tohru's help. And he finds something he never found before as well, which if he hadn't confided in Tohru, who knows what would have happened?]

Characters related to Ritsu:
- Tohru
- Mesho-san
- Shigure
- Kyo
- Yuki
- Ayame
- Hatori
- Mitchan
- Kagura

Pretty sure that's it. Anyways, ENJOY!!!!! Very Happy

You forgot his parents! Wink

Speaking of which, I think that Ritsu's parents spoiler[while they are strange and do the same apology thing...still love him. At least in what I've read, they haven't treated him like some other parents have. Of course, the constant apoligizing for even breathing probably wasn't healthy for Ritsu either.]

Mesho-san is his mother. Anyways, spoiler[I don't know who gets the extreme apologizing from who, but I'm sure that it gives other people heart attacks Laughing For Ritsu's clumsiness, his parents did have to constantly apologize, and his wearing women's clothes aggravated this. Ritsu just couldn't find a way not be how he was so that his parents wouldn't have to apologize. Which is why he contemplated suicide.]

Ah! I guess I never caught her name in the manga. She was called The Hostess in the anime if I remember correctly.

spoiler[I'm sure he was thinking it because his actions were leading to nowhere other than seeing his parents apologizing because of him all the time. So he thought that he didn't want to be a burden on his parents. But his conversation to Tohru got him to thinking otherwise, her saying that no one is a burden, and that we are all here for one reason or another. And then he met Mitchan] Very Happy

I think that at first I was annoyed by Ritsu's constant apologizing. I said to myself :This is stupid and I never thought again about what might have driven him to do this. At the same time as the story progressed I discovered that his constant apologizing had deep roots. In spite spoiler[of having loving parents (and thus being one of the few lucky zodiacs that had the luck of being blessed) he had a big problem. He constantly saw his parents having to apologize for him and this triggered two reactions:
1. he has started to dress like a woman because he considered that this way the blame wouldn't be as bad and people would find it acceptable for him to do so many mistakes.
2. he has started to consider himself a burden for being so clumsy (God, I so understand him at this - I'm a clumsy person myself) and he has started to contemplate the idea of killing himself which personally I thought to be an extremely sad thing. To consider yourself a burden for the others is terrible and Ritsu made me understand that at that point there was something deeper to his character which made me love him and consider him one of the characters which made the story of Fruits Basket more special.
So I think that for him having loving parents didn't count so much as the reactions that he triggered from the others which became a burden for himself.
]

But Ritsu has succeeded spoiler[in conquering his fears. Btw, he is also a very funny character: I remember that when Akito revealed to the zodiacs that she was actually a woman at first when Ritsu saw she in woman's clothes, he thought that Akito had the same tendency and habit has he did. And that was really funny.]

Good Morning to all and page 45!! Very Happy

spoiler[Akito's reaction was pretty funny too. She almost didn't anything. When Ritsu had the last of the milk at Shigure's house, after he apologized he offered it to Kyo AFTER he had already put it in the cereal. Kyo's reaction? He'd rather die Laughing Ritsu on the other hand, couldn't even stand up to the cat, because one got one of the tacoyakis that he was supposed to take home to Shigure as well. ]And on a side note, I think the anime did a very good job with this story frame. Ritsu was just all out hilarious, in fact it was this episode that I saw that got me into watching and reading Fruits Basket Very Happy

I'll admit I have always been confused at whyspoiler[Ritsu would be more comfortable in women's clothes. Is it because people are more forgiving of females being clumsy and men have higher expectations?. In my family it is the opposite. Err. . .I would like to mention that Ritsu being the way he is probably doesn't look down on Kyo for being the cat. He has so many issues of his own that he would probably be the last to cast aspersions on Kyo]

About spoiler[Ritchan and Mitchan, I got the impression that their conversation in Vol. 8, where Mitchan was complaining about how bad Shigure treated her, was the first time Ritsu really listened to another's problems. I think in Mitchan, Ritsu sees that other people can have bad lives too, even lives as bad as his own (from his perspective).]

Maybe spoiler[that's part of the attraction between Ritchan and Mitchan. Maybe Ritsu senses a kindred spirit in Mitchan. After all, she was composing a suicide note when they met. Of course, that's assuming there's a romance in the future for these two. The U.S. volumes aren't that far yet.] Very Happy

spoiler[In the last chapter Kagura asks Ritsu whether he and Mitchan are going to get married or not. And then Ritsu starts tearing the clothes that he's holding for Kagura to put away] Laughing
Ritsu spoiler[is older than Akito, but not quite old enough to be let known (I believe that he was 2 at the time) of the big secret. It seems though that he had no problems with Akito that we know of, heck, the first interaction of him and AKito that we saw was when Akito revealed her true form to everybody. So I would imagine that he did not have any ill thoughts towards Akito at all.]

I think that I was most amused in volume 8 when spoiler[Tohru and Ritsu wanted both to say something at the same time and didn't know who should go first so they were inviting each other to talk first. Oh, men, this might have taken for ever and ever. Rolling Eyes ] Very Happy

As for Ritsu's special situation as a jyuunishi: spoiler[well, as you said, it's clear that Ritsu didn't have any bad interaction with Akito and he maybe the only one who hasn't any problem with her. But at the same time he has admitted many times towards Tohru that he hasn't special abilities like the other jyuunishi, or at least so he said. And one other reason for wearing woman's clothes was the fact that he would feel much calmer in such close (I don't know exactly why) but it seemed to be better for him. I think that Ritsu has always been quite a shy person and a clumsy one as well. All the incidents in which he would get involved would have made him even a more retreat person but nevertheless, he wanted so much to live for someone else. To be with someone else was a pretty important thing for him and this has proved to be Mi-chan. When he met her she was just getting in an emotional collapse and then all of the sudden she was describing her torments and Ritsu would understand everything and would gladly listen to her. So I think that in a way Ritsu has found a person who doesn't feel special also, who has lost confidence in all she was (due to the cruel, terrible Shigure Wink ) and who is know just like him. Maybe this is why they connected so well. ]

One thing about Ritsu and Mii-chanspoiler[they wear sorta the opposite in clothes. While Ritsu wears female kimonos Mii-chan wears power suits. Laughing She also wears her hair VERY short as opposed to Ritsu's long hair. She has a very stressfull job keeping the slug to his deadllines! Perhaps in her case she feels calmer in a suit that makes her fell more in charge? This duo complemenst each other as most do, but they can also rant together aswell for both have very excitable natures. ]

At times spoiler[it's just that people caught in the same situation connect because they can understand each other in what is happening to them. I'd love to see if their kids are going to be apologetic. If they are, we know who it came from] Laughing
Ritsu spoiler[also has somebody to inspire him to be more "manly." Who other than Ayame to give Ritsu the hope that he can become more manly Laughing Hatori and Shigure seem to suggest against it, and I kind of have to agree with them, cause Ritsu could NEVER be like Ayame. Ayame has an immune system that is out of this world, and things just bounce off him, no matter what is thrown at him. Be it words or things. ]
