The only one I hadn't heard of until now was Tensai Bakabon. I know of Ace wo Nerae from reading the Buried Treasure article, and I have seen one episode (not 41, probably 30) of Gold Lightan. I first heard of Dokonjo Gaeru from Busterbeam on Tumblr, and I first found out about Kyojin no Hoshi from that "lonely Christmas party" image that's been circulating the Internet.

Edit: Just did a search on Gold Lightan episode 41. I can see why Yuasa recommended it. It has some really impressive animation for an episode of an early 80's TV series.

Can we get Production IG to stop making Mamoru Oshii anime?

(I kid. Mostly.)

Kick Heart was great, though! Hopefully we'll get more projects like this if more animators and such open up to Kickstarter.

For a moment I thought you were rescueing Gunbuster (Top wo Nerae). No I haven't heard of them.

See the Aim for the Ace film recently, pure Dezaki. Don't see how it's really relevant to Kick-Heart beyond crowdfunding. Star of the Giants is too old for probably anyone beyond you, Mike Toole, or Justin to care about, and people only know Gold Lightan for the ridiculousness of a giant gold lighter mecha. Haven't heard of the others, and after looking at them... what's so important about those specific episodes?

Get Aim for the Ace on BD, it really helps make the 79 animation seem timeless, like it could have been produced in the mid-late 80s instead. Doesn't hurt that you can force all of the Gunbuster connections in trying to sell it either: "See where Anno copied the narrative scene for scene!"

Even if you never watch those old shows, it's just too easy dismiss historical influence of those episode.

Those old anime episodes are important because they had tremendous impact on Japanese animation art and also may have influenced generations of animators and directors throughout the industry. They don't just select those episodes randomly. I don't know the details, but I think those episodes somehow influenced Yuasa's body of works including Kickheart.

Masaaki Yuasa is one of the avant-garde directors/animators in the Japanese animation industry. Anime Style Chief Editor Oguro doesn't put some popular artist of the day into spotlight, but pioneers and innovators who do things differently than rest of the industry. His insight on recognizing animation talents is uncanny. Oguro did a lengthy interview with Mamoru Hosoda years before he became famous with "Girl who girl leapt through Time".

I think you're just looking at those anime at only at surface level. That's why you don't see the relevance.

I don't see the relevance because I haven't seen those episodes, or even those TV series, so my view will be that shallow until I do. Even if I did, it would only just be for the art, since any context would be lost unless I had watched the rest of the series.

It's not like there's a whole lot of Mamoru Oshii anime these past 10 years anyway. Confused

Anyway, commenting on the discussions in this thread, the anime episodes described in this thread are for animation geeks. If you're really into studying the nitty gritty of key animation work and the like, then yes they will be of interest. If you're more a casual viewer of animation or study them on a more general level, it's not like you "have to" know about them.

walw6pK4Alo, you're absolutely right that beyond an interest in the technical aspects of animation work, you probably wouldn't find these episodes of interest. Fans like this one: http://www.pelleas.net/aniTOP/index.php would probably have more interest in this kind of stuff.

Personally, I have some interest in this, but I'm not a super animation fan geek like the above Ben Ettinger or anything like that.

And yes, I've heard of those shows listed by the way.

Three of the five at least. Aim for the Ace is something mentioned so frequently I'd expect most who have been fans for a while to at least have heard the name. Star of the Giants less so but not a real enigma. Gold Lightan should be recognizable to most super robot or Tatsunoko fans.

Gaeru and Bakabon are two that I'm not familiar with at all.
