No, it just has no decent competition.

From what I've heard, it's actually a really bad movie. Pity, because the first one was quite decent and the manga is great.

I've heard the opposite. At least, I've heard it ends WAY better than the manga does with it's cool plot twist.

No, it wasn't very good and most of it's reviews from what I've seen have made it out to be ok at best and a very... simplistic movie I guess you could say. Death Note is just pretty trendy now and like was mentioned a lack of any real major competition has giving it a chance to shine, but personally it wasn't very good.
