Care to explain the full range of Obscure-O-Meter? Does a bigger number shows a higher degree of rarity or the other way around?
Ref: The Soviet Military Award Page
Of course, R8 and R* are not applicable to anime releases. |

I am most pleased to see this column coming into existence... I love obscurites and oddities, but what I cna find in anime usually equals 'crappy title from a wal-mart dollar bin'. Nice to have a reference for titles that will actually be worth my time to find!

Is it just my computer, or does the text turn giant after the introduction paragraph?

Same here. I was going to ask about that.
Otherwise, its a good article. I'd like to see these, but it looks like that will be rather difficult. So, will this be a weekly column? That would be cool. |

First of all, I want to say how incredibly happy I am that ANN now has this column. New fans, younger fans, older fans -- everyone can benefit from this fantastic treasure trove of re-discovered titles. Thank you so much!
Secondly, I used to be a manager at a retail video chain, and I swear we had a dvd copy of Robot Carnival. I'm fairly certain I lifted it in disgust one day from its hiding place next to Spongebob in the kids section and moved it to a more appropriate home near Tokyo Godfathers in Foreign. (At the time the store didn't have an anime section, I think it has one now.) I suppose it could have been an import, but I'm fairly adept at spotting those and it didn't look like one to me. Of course, this was a few years ago, and I may not be remembering the copy properly. Or I could be mistaken about it entirely. But I'm pretty certain we had it. Is there really no US dvd? Perhaps the new Honnamaise label will pick it up. |

I've made a concerted effort from the start to keep the older and/or more obscure titles in my field of view as I build my collection so this article was perfectly timed, especially since I've been researching 'Robot Carnival' for several weeks now. I could swear I had seen this as a domestic DVD release so I've been spinning my wheels in [what turns out to have been] a fruitless search for it.
Perhaps at some point we'll also see a 'Likelihood-o-Meter' (ok, crummy name) that indicates how likely it is that we'll see the given title released in a desirable medium in North America... |

HitokiriShadow, it says in the intro, it's bi-weekly.
I've been trying to find a copy of this ever since the import VHS I had got eaten by my player nearly 10 years ago^^; I would love to see a modern, re-mastered version, without the crappy dub (I couldn't get the sub version). The closest thing to Presence (in feel at least) is Angels Egg. I don't think this has been released in the states, even though it's been licenced for several years. JBV^_^ The text looks fine to me (probably a missing close tag in the HTML) |

Tsunami... I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks there might have been an actual US dvd release. Of course, we could both be delusional...
This column has made me so nostalgic -- one of the first anime collectables I ever bought was a Robot Carnival trading card collection, about 15 or 16 years ago, I think. God, that makes me feel old. *laughs* |

What a fantastic new article. Congrats, guys.
Not to mention the fact that I absolutely adore Robot Carnival. I found that DVD you mentioned once and bought it up. So, may I suggest a column on Giant Robo? It was recently re-released on DVD, making it not that rare, but I've always felt it was a bit obscure and under-appreciated. Just a suggestion. I'll be looking forward to this one in the future. |

I thought the same thing when I saw your post! I fear you may be exactly right though; we are both delusional. Then again, perhaps we're both deluding ourselves into thinking there is someone else who shares our same delusion!
Now that's pretty neat having had access to that kind of thing so far back then....and I don't mean 'so far back then' to make you feel old. In fact I'm old enough to have potentially had a similar experience but I grew up equidistant from the coasts and very little anime made it that far inland. Was it a fairly common thing to see anime merchandise then or would you consider your trading card encounter a fluke? Last edited by Tsunami3k on Thu Oct 26, 2006 12:20 am; edited 1 time in total |

Glad to see this collumn come into existance, it is certainly needed. Also, good call on making the first subject Robot Carnival, I'd have cried foul and called a plague upon your house otherwise. It is quite simply one of the most increadible anime I've seen in my life, and it deserves far more play than it gets. Kicks Studio Ghibli's ass left and right.

It's been said before, but I'll say it again: This is an awesome column. I'd been hoping for something like this for a while.
Funny timing, I just bought some old VHS titles that never got DVD releases at a Hollywood Video sale today. Space Adventure Cobra, man! |

Wow, I'm gonna love this column!
I saw Robot Carnival way back when SciFi channel used to have an anime week once a year. I have no idea what year that was(the 90's have all seemed to blur together). The only thing I really remember was the part where the massive treaded Robot Carnival was rolling into that village & a very ironic explosion at the end. I would love to see it again. |
