I am a part of a college anime club and I'm running the club's seperate movie night and I was wondering what are some good movies to show (anime/live action/etc.) I was looking for some other good stuff other than the normal Miyazaki stuff.

It depends a lot on your audience. Do they tolerate extremely graphic content? If not or you're not sure then you don't want to be showing them Ninja Scroll. Most of the other recommendations made so far are dependent on being at least generally familiar with the series and/or source material to appreciate. For purely stand-alone choices, I'd recommend any of the following for a college-aged audience: Perfect Blue: Satoshi Kon's first effort is a psychothriller classic about an idol singer whose transition into the world of acting is not without big complications, including stalking, murders, and psychotic episodes. Somewhat graphic, but great storytelling and a real mess-with-your-mind plot. Millenium Actress: Tame (PG-rated) and subbed-only story about the life and career of an aging actress as told through flashbacks and movie clips. Very neat because it gradually becomes apparent over the course of the movie that she's playing out her life story through her movies. Dramatic and a bit of a tear-jerker in the end. Escaflowne: The Movie: Very well-made alternate retelling of the Visions of Escaflowne TV series which requires no familiarity with the series. Basically it's fantasy mecha, but done well and with an outstanding musical score. Spriggan: Flashy, good-looking, and very well-made movie about super-human agents collecting ancient artifacts. Packed with action, to the point that its plot suffers a bit for it, but a good pick for a high-testosterone crowd. Place Promised In Our Earlier Days: Generally mild story about two boys who make a promise to a girl in their youth but forget about it over time and go their separate ways, only to have that promise ultimately draw them back together again. Well-made but a little slow. Grave of the Fireflies/Barefoot Gen: If you want to be educational as well as entertaining, pick one of these two emotional movies about the Japanese homefront during WW II. The former is a tragic story about two orphans trying to get by after they lose their home and mother to the Allied firebombing of Kyoto and is widely considered one of the all-time greats, while the latter is a very harsh and uncompromising story about a boy who lives through the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Wings of Honneamise: GAINAX's first feature movie, it's also considered an all-time classic in telling an alternate-world tale of a people's (at times) half-assed efforts to launch a man into space. Might be a bit harder to find, but this surprisingly powerful story is well-made and more than worth the effort to track down. |

I was willing to leave this open, but I already got a few list posts that I had to delete, so too bad. It's a shame, really. Not to mention this. Oh, well. Please PM the user if you're still wanting to help.
