I realy felt I had to do this.
Rurouni Kenshin is an anime that I just love and would not mind discussing it with anyone. The story is about a young girl, Karou, a samurai, Kenshin, and friends, Sanosuki, and Yahiko. And you should just watch the anime to know the rest, but take it from me it is great. It has romance, violence, and humour, a great story. Anyway, I think the last episode of Rurouni Kenshin was realy dissappointing. After having seen great anime, and art, the real life footage merged together with the drawn charcters just did not seem right. The ending could have been a bit more romantic and funny. The object of this topic is to try and get a healthy discussion about RK going. I like to think of my self as a true RK fan. |

I'll avoid being a jerk and just coming in here and ruining the topic by saying that Kenshin sucks but Kenshin falls under the came character archetype that Vash and Abel Nightroad belong to, thus I got tired of this anime fast. In fact, I watched the first episode and thought to myself "Don't want another Vash clone anime".
And thats all I have to say for now. |

If you are going to say that you dont like a series please tell us what makes this series a pain for you. I am a rurouni kenshin fan and enjoy seeing rurouni kenshin media. As for being a similar to Trigun, it's a SHOUNEN. It not that uncommon to have a kicka$$ former killer that feels sorrow for all the lives that he once took. The difference is that Kenshin takes a more human approach by staying away from the whole spiritual energy, aliens , or mechs theme. I respect almost everyones opinion provided that it's just that, your own opinion and not just someone elses that you feel you should tell everyone about. |

Not that I'm a diehard Rurouni fan but... Trigun: Vintage: 1998-04-01 to 1998-09-30 Rurouni Kenshin TV: Vintage: 1996-01-10 to 1998-09-08 I think you mean that Vash is just another clone of Kenshin. |

Hey thanks for sticking together RK fans.
Kenshin's character is great, his sense of humour and persistence is funny. The fact that he was modelled to be more feminin makes hime all the more interesting. Personally I think Sano is a great guy too, his style and cockiness is unmatched. I should ask what version do you guys watch? Japanese dub or English Dub? I personaly prefer the Japanese dub as it has more emotion in it and love, and Kenshin's "ORO" is not left out. I am not sure but I think I read that Kenshin's voice (in the Japanese dub) was done by a Japanese female Saiyo. But anyway hope you agree that the Japanese dub was a wee bit better than its English counterpart. |

Well their were two dubs of the show. But nevertheless when i first saw the show i liked the dub with Richard Hayworth as kenshin himura, which i wanted to buy for a long time. My beef with the Japanese dub was that kenshin sounded to feminine and i stopped watching the original and stuck with the eng dub. But after i saw the OVA Trust & Betrayal i saw how the voice of kenshin was made to compliment his age which was about 18 in the movie. But either is acceptable to me so long as i can understand it and its the same series that i love so much.

There have been numerous Kenshin threads in the past. Amongst the biggest are the ones discussing the third season. I seem to be the only person out there who not only tolerates, but prefer the third seaon. The series until that point is a very standard shonen series, complete with a chain of mini boses leading to the final big boss. Don't get me wrong, I think it is better handled compared to series like Dragon Ball, Hokuto no Ken, Inuyasha, Naruto, or all of those other really famous titles. I'm just not a big fan of the genre. The third season had some great undertones. The idea of Western culture clashing with Eastern. The idea of the era of chivalry being replaced by an era of science. The idea of Christianity in Japan and religious freedoms. The season also had the strongest romantic comedy episodes. I also love the Misao episode, as well as the Tai episode where Kenshin finds the ring. The artist episode was another which shows us a new era is approaching. To me the third season is about the ushuring in of the Meiji era, a period in Japan that facinates me, but is rarely covered in anime. It seems like an era so long ago, yet my grandparents were all born to this era. It is odd to think their parents were born around the same time as the RK characters. I understand why fans of the manga might not like the third season, but to me it was the season we saw the most depth in character for Yahiko and Sano, since the season was less focused on Kenshin. I will agree to the statement that most RK manga fans should skip it, but feel that many people who might appreciate it don't last through the first two seasons.
One thing that I've not discussed about the series is the strange collection of OP and ED credits. The number and variety rival Inuyasha's lot. I think my favorite is Rain, with it's simple images. The English versions of the songs are actually not too bad as well. Speaking of English I will agree with Tony and the rest by stating that I really dislike the dub. There is the controversy that Kenshin sounds like a girl in Japanese, but I will take that over the really poorly pronounced names in the dub. Also the oro and gozaru really don't translate very well. I never saw the older Samurai X tv dub, but I hear it beats the Media Blasters dun. I also tend to be biased towards shows taking place in Japan being watched in Japanese. I'm also a big fan of Reflections. At least I know there are a few other fans of the final OVA out there which tends be be loved or hated. It was nice to see a solid ending of a huge franchise since I will agree with the nebulous last episode of the tv series. I find it odd that people will point out the inconsistancy of character for this OVA, since there have always been multiple Kenshin personalities ever since the tv series came to be. The Kenshin from Trust and Betrayal is also a very different Kenshin from the series, but I rarely hear people complain. I did like the scenes from the third arc, and can see why people were resentful about the third season and Reflections. I feel as though this is a tad unfair (not liking season 3) but believe that season three and Reflections might not be as hated if there was a fourth season covering the third arc. Who knows what the future has in store for Kenshin. The franchise is still popular in Japan, and this year is the tenth anniversay. They are remastering the entire series in Japan for a December release, and I believe the manga just finished it's run in the US. I believe that Kenshin's return could happen, especially if the Eva movies and Hellsing remake do well. |

Well I've watched both dub and sub, and I can only say I liked the sub a little bit better than the dub...just a little bit...like 1/10000ths of a bit...only cause the voices fit the fact that it was portrayed in 1700's Japan...I've said in previous sub over dub threads that it just depends where the anime takes place...in a country where Japanese isn't spoken I prefer English voices. But I am a pretty big fan of Rurouni Kenshin and I have to say it's truely on of the best shounen titles IMO. Even though Kenshin has taken a life of peace he can still kick some a**, though he starts out avoiding fights, if you keep watching til about eps 5 he...well you'll see some guys get b**ch slapped (Kenshin style).
![]() ![]() EDIT: Well for alot of people Randall Miyashiro the third season isn't there "cup of tea" I didn't hate it though it didn't really leave an impression on me. ![]() |

It's no big surprise to anyone that knows about kenshin that it was cut unjustly. Sure their was some pretty crappy filler but , if you think about it about 85% of the filler that most people see in anime is veiwed as worthless. But people usually try to endure it because it usually means that something good is in the works. Although the series ended very badly the movie Reflections could be considered a very possible ending to the series if not sad.
It's possible the kenshin will return but unlikely. However, if it does come back for another installment you can bet that this fan would be happy to see the Battousai back in action. |

I have to say that when I first started with the sub, Kenshin's voice was a little irritating with its feminine sound, so I immediately switched back the the dub that I had watched sparingly on CN a few years ago. I eventually got fed up with the pronunciations which I know are horribly wrong in the MB version and Kaoru's and Misao's voices made my ears bleed, so I turned back on the Japanese track. Kenshin's voice grew on me, and Saito's voice is just exquisite. It's a true shame that his seiyuu died. I also like Shishio's voice, because it fits him much better in the Japanese version. He sounds way too much like David Hayter in the English version.

I consider Reflections the true ending...I don't mind sad endings as long as the story is told and leaves no lingering questions...unless its a mystery...action anime should have definetive endings.

Who cares about it being sad? The problem is that it makes no sense and runs counter to the themes presented in the Kenshin franchise. It's a story of redemption and rising out of the ashes of a tragic past, not pouting and crawling back into that misery and wallowing in it until you die slowly and horribly. And it creates so many plotholes that it's not even funny. Kenshin says right at the beginning of both the TV series and the manga that he'll never directly aid the government, yet when Reflection first starts he's going to China to boost the morale of the Japanese military. At the end of the Kyoto Arc, he says the Kamiya dojo is his home, yet in Reflection he denies that and takes up wandering again...pretty much right out of the blue. Hiko is also apparently training Kenji in Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu, yet Hiko himself said there can only be a master and an apprentice. Hiko + Kenshin + Kenji makes three. And just where in the hell did this "boohoo I hate my father" angle come from? It's unnecessary and is only included for more pissy, overdone, melodramatic, unintentionally comedic angst. Oh and the mangled butchery they call an animated Jinchuu Arc? That was just painful. The most dramatic and spellbinding piece of Kenshin lore ever conceived is summed up in all of about ten minutes. As a flashback. With the involvement of everyone except for Kenshin, Kaoru, and Enishi utterly removed. Yeah, it's not like Saitou or Aoshi or Sanosuke or Megumi or Yahiko had any importent, relevant character development during that arc, no, not at all. ![]() The only ending Rurouni Kenshin has is in the manga. Period. You see Jinchuu in full, and all the various character and plot threads come full circle in a way that doesn't fiercely contradict the ongoing themes of the story at large. |

Hm.. where to start? I'll try not to make this too long because I'm tired right now and want to watch some anime myself, but here goes:
For a full and lengthy review of both the TV series and Tsuiokuhen OVA, you can read them on this page. As big a fan as I am, I never read the manga till after I saw the anime 2 or 3 times through. At this point, I prefer the manga for its nearly flawless translation and high quality work in the little things (honorifcs, name order, keeping some words and proper nouns untranslated such as Hitokiri Battousai instead of "Buttousai the Manslayer," as it sounds in the dub). However, I do prefer the anime version of the Kyoto arc simply because it copies the manga almost panel for panel. As for the anime, I love everything about it from the art, animation, music, seiyuu, etc. I don't mind at all that Kenshin is voiced by a woman because Watsuki himself was ecstatic when he first heard Ogata Megumi on the drama CD. I'm familiar with some of her work and think she would've been great had she carried over to the TV series, but I really enjoy Suzukaze Mayo. Her voice is somewhat deep and gives me the impression of a very elegent, yet strong person. I don't see why so many people get uppity about females playing male roles. Japanese people have naturally high-pitched voices, so it shouldn't be that big a surprise. As for the English dub, I can't stand it. I made some really long posts a few years back picking at all the details about casting, pronunciation, and dialogue, but I'm too lazy to find it right now. On an intersting note, they had Sano played by Seki Tomokazu on the drama CD. He's one of my favorites and I would love to have heard him over Ueda Yuuji, as good a job as he did already, but oh well. In terms of the notorious 3rd season and Seisouhen OVA, I didn't like them. I am a big fan of shounen series and don't particularly appreciate filler. Bleach is the only special instance right now, but a lot of the times these shounen fillers just never feel very continuous with the rest of the series. I saw Season 3 one time through long before reading or even hearing of the Jinchuu arc and it just never caught my attention. A lot of the material didn't strike me as poignant or unique in any fashion to warrant my praise. Seisouhen, while very good in terms of production values, is just way to mangled for my tastes. To cram close to 10 volumes of manga into one hour and not even end it the right way is downright insulting to the creator, which is no surprise why Watsuki himself disowned it. I'm only up to vol. 22 of the manga, but with so much exposure to the anime, it's child's play to imagine the voices (I cast them from a mixture of Ocean and Bang Zoom! voices), movements, and music in my head when I read it. As much as I'd like there to be a continuance, I've sort of accepted that this hope is somewhat futile. If it doesn't happen, oh well. My imagination is pretty good. If by chance this does happen, well then sign me up for the preorder 5+ years in advance ![]() I'm sure I'm forgetting to comment on some other things right now, but most of it should be covered between this post and my mini review on My Anime. Any more questions or comments? Please feel free to post. |

My view on Kenshin is that it is a pretty decent anime for its type. Kenshin didn't exactly pop out as somethingly amazingly special, but in my opinion it wasn't a waste of time, especially the Kyoto Arc. Kenshin wasn't an anime that I watched consectively (argh can't spell), since I really didn't feel that the episodes gave me much of that cliff hanger feeling. Yes Kenshin there are those episodes spoiler[When Kenshin fights Aioshi (right?...) with the double kodachis, and also when he returns to his teacher to learn the ultimate attack], they didn't give me the real feeling to keep watching, I'm not sure why though. Even some animes that the episodes were kind of random kept me watching them.
Never the less, Kenshin turned out to be a good anime, and I can fully understand why your a fan.
Well, if you didn't like Trigun, then there is a chain of anime that you probably didn't like, such as Naruto, Bleach just to name a few along with all the other Shounen titles...(Hunter X Hunter gets stuck in there too.) Maybe you should watch the episodes as in the first 10 episodes and then watch the Kyoto Arc, since that is when the anime picks up... Picks up as in gets to the main part of the anime people seem to enjoy the most. |

And the same stereotyped character that made Kenshin existed before both. When a bunch of things are the same then it doesn't really matter to me who is a clone of whom.
I'm pretty sure I did just that with my post. Basically, the main character is not a type that I like and a series with a bad main character isn't something I can watch. It's pretty much the same deal for me with Fullmetal Panic and Love Hina. I hated the main characters in those and that entirely ruined both series for me. Not that I have to like every character all the time, but when a massively pivotal point of something is incurably flawed then it isn't worth my time. |
