Damn, I was hoping he would get through this okay. The only one of his directorial works I've seen is Serial Experiments Lain, but it had a large effect on me and remains one on my favorite series to this day, I definitely know what I'm watching next, though. And I guess this probably ends any chances of Despera getting made. This is the first guy in the industry that I've actually known about before his passing away in my 2 years of anime fandom, and it's really sad. The wired will definitely remember you.
RIP

Rest in peace good sir. The only anime he directed that I watched was Lain but I knew from just that one series alone that he was a great director.

Damn. Kino's Journey is my favorite anime; Serial Experiments Lane one of my top favorites. And I'm almost done with Ghost Hound.
Rest in peace. You had a creative, wonderful eye. I will certainly miss him.

Just for those who'd like a full list, here's all the shows he directed:
-The Life of Guskou Budori
-Legend of Crystania: The Motion Picture
-Legend of Crystania: The Chaos Ring (director for all 3 OVA episodes)
-Serial Experiments Lain (director/series director for all 13 episodes)
-Colorful (director for all 16 episodes)
-Sakura Wars TV (series director for all 25 episodes)
-Kino’s Journey (director for all 13 episodes)
-Kino’s Journey: The Beautiful World (movie)
-REC (director for all ten 12 minute episodes)
-Ghost Hound (director for all 22 epiodes)
Pretty great resume overall, I'd say. He shall be missed.

I'm an enormous "Sakura Wars" fan, for sure, but "Serial Experiments Lain" had a profound impact on my life. The way it bent over backwards to not pander to mainstream interests, and to stay true to its artistic vision and social commentary, was deeply admirable for a show of its time... heck, it's still deeply admirable today. Furthermore, its narrative was a big influence on me as a writer, and made me realize how diverse anime could really get. That could not have been done without Nakamura-san's wonderful direction.
I am deeply depressed that he didn't get to do "Despera", as it was looking to be a fantastic show. Honestly, I would have liked to see him anything more. But yet, cancer has claimed another victim. And so, I sit here and cry to myself in my dorm, as one of the biggest influences on my life has passed away.
Rest in peace, Nakamura-san.

Having seen both Ghost Hound and Lain, I can say that this guy's works were very good at making surrealism actually being surreal. I was really looking forward to Despara, but I guess we will never see that ever happening. Now I have to get Kino's Journey next. R.I.P.

What of the unfinished Despera series he was working on? Will it ever be completed? It was the third time the Lain crew were working together (the second being Ghost Hound)

I would hazard to say that Serial Experiments Lain is one of the half-dozen greatest anime ever made, and Nakamura's wonderful, atmospheric direction is a major factor in its success. Kino's Journey is also a beautifully realized, classic show, and Ghost Hound is outstanding as well.
Bottom line, anime has lost one of its most distinctive and accomplished artists. He will be missed by fans around the world, and his work will outlive not just him, but all of us.
