What should my first manga be, I've been a anime fan for just over a year now and I'm ready to get a manga. Thing is, I have no idea where to start, I was thinking FLCL, Excel Saga, or Trigun Maxiumum. Is there a manga that everyone knows about (like some animes, everyone has at least heard of things like Eva, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, ect. ect.). Any help whould be greatly appreciated.

I like Chobits and Love Hina personally, and I'm sure a lot of other people love these series as well. I don't know if they are up your alley, since Akira, GitS, Eva, etc are not in the same genre as these two.

If you don't want cute, go with Gundam Wing. I love that manga, GW is very well-known, and it's definately not "cute". If you want something REALLY far from cute, Vampire Princess Miyu should do it. Dark, bloody, and filled with vampires. If cute freaks you out, stay away from my favorite series, though. Fushigi Yugi is not for people who don't like sappy romance, hot guys, superstrong crossdressers, and very twisted best friends...

if ya want some SERIOUS reading, get Akira. 6 volumes, about 2000 pages total, may even be possible to find it in colour somewhere. Eva isn't done being translated (assuming you want it in english), it's only at vol7.

Love Hina is a great manga. That was my first manga series I bought. I recommend that to new manga readers. But it depends on what gernes you like.

Don't buy manga based on Anime. The story was written in those cases to be shown in a differant medium. But that only applies to a few manga that are bandwagon profit seekers.
That said, buy Love Hina for a romance aimed at young men, Trigun/Trigun Maximium and Naruto are good for action, as is the Kenshin Manga. The last three either just started their USA release to novels or are gonna start. I know Hikaru no Go will start sometime next year, and it will be a good sports style manga.

I've only just started it, but so far the FLCL manga seems destined to disappoint most fans. Which is not to say it's bad; I bet a lot of Top Shelf/Alternative comics fans would enjoy it more than most manga fans.
Osamu Tezuka, of Astro Boy, Pheonix, Adolph, Black Jack, is regarded as the father on manga, so check his work out.

Absolutely agreed. And one of (if not the) best graphic novels period.

Not really. It gives you a peek into plenty of shonen titles, but nothing else. If you want something that's not aimed at teenage boys, you won't see it here.
