Well if all the pictures and files are correct it is pretty damning.
But I will say, it is a pretty nice picture though. I wonder why they just didn't pay this guy as soon as he came forward? |

It's because the publisher is a non-profit organization, so they probably had no money to give HOON the original creator. Anyways, reading their forums a little bit, if they resolve this issue, they will get 3 exclusive cover arts from HOON in high quality files. So it's all good that they resolved it quickly as possible, because copying work is bad

It's completely obvious how stolen the piece is. The second "artist" simply cropped Hoon's picture to remove his signature off of the bottom. The guy even tried to claim that he had simply used Hoon's as the basis for his own new drawing, which is just obviously not true, as they're the same down the last pixel. I hope Future Quake sues the pants off of this guy.
Well, that wouldn't solve the fact that the entire print run is out there with somebody else's name signed to his artwork. Really, what Hoon is asking for is not only within his rights, it's actually pretty cool of him to be as understanding as he is. |

I don't know what's more disgusting: the fact that this person stole the art and pretended it was his own or the fact that after being pointed out as a thief, he STILL tried to claim that it was a copy that he painted himself "based on" the original piece.

Art theft is just really unexcusable, but I have to admit my main shock at this is that the original artist actually found out about it, considering he lives in the US and the magazine is from the UK.
I also think FutureQuake and HOON have been dealing with this very well, the best way they could have...and I expect the FQ will be needing more substantial proof in the future about the authenticity of art sent to them. |

heck, it surprised me that he was from the same area i'm from (Bay Area of CA) I think it has been resolved very nicely. I'm glad everyone was nice to each other. Although i can understand how bad it must feel to be plagerised. People need to have more shame. |

When I first clicked the link to the art in question, I wasn't expecting that particular picture. Seriously, what kind of idiot tries to plagiarize HOON?
 If you see a picture that good, chances are you're not the only person who's seen it.

Deviantart is a huge community and people really look out for each other there so it's easy for someone to see the picture somewhere and notify the original artist. One thing is for sure though: FutureQuake is getting a lot of publicity for this controversy and more people are now aware of the magazine. |

Yeah. HOON's being very understanding here. Most freelance artists would've sent a written letter (similar to HOON's post) along with an invoice/bill. If that went ignored, then they [might] send it again. If the company/infringer doesn't respond after that, then things may have to get a little ugly. Infringement and theft of original art CANNOT be tolerated, under any circumstances. Small-press or not, in this day and age I think it's important that these things are always handled with binding, legal agreements. Even if there's ZERO money exchanged, FUTUREQUAKE should've sent the [rip-off] "artist" paperwork to allowing them to use the work on their cover. And, no, it's not "going a little overboard", in case that's what some of you may be thinking. There are many books on the market out there to help the self-employed and small businesses/groups (non-profit or not) draw up these legal documents. It's all about protecting yourself from, well, yourself and asswipes like "Pekka Mäki-Kuutti". FUTUREQUAKE might've avoided this whole mess with a little digging and an exchange of John Hancocks. If this "Pekka Mäki-Kuutti" was who they said they were, they would've had little problems accepting a PDF/faxed agreement, reviewing it, choosing to sign it, then scaning it and sending it back. "Good faith" has a way of biting you in the ass (as it's done here). You can't just take people on the INTERNETs at their word; especially, when it comes to stuff like this. |

Judging by, oh...every other comic on that site I'm sure that's soon to change. Obviously the giveaway something was wrong was when the cover didn't totally suck. Say, what are the odds of seeing a HOON artbook? That would make for a nice apology. |

HOON's art studio has a branch in the UK--but that's neither here nor there since it's the internet, and he's a global, professional artist. It's not that hard to track down theft. |

As a member of dA, you see this stuff happening every day. So when I heard the HOON's art got stolen, it wasn't "Really?!", it was "Another one?" This type of thing happens all of the time. However, when it's in print format, then it's bigger than your typical internet art thief. |
