The opening rant was really well worded. It makes us all look like pretentious pricks when we act that way towards nonfans. This makes the whole fanbase get judged in an even harsher light. It's bad enough to be written off as either strange perverts who get off to "cartoon porn" or be labeled as Pokemon fans (Not saying there is anything wrong with that), but there is really no need to have us consider as antisocial jerks.

For the record, I didn't even *know* there was a Willy Wonka anime. Or was he being sarcastic?

The opening comment from Shelf Life were very powerful and true. My time spent at anime convention have led me to believe that a lot of (anime) fans enjoying taking pop shots at one another.
I mean what the hell? Everyone (Basically) looks down on us for being nerds who like anime porn (hentai) and yet most fans find it necessary to make fun of one another. If there one thing you wished that you could see at conventions it's kind people who want to discuss anime/manga and more importantly just have a good time. |

Hence the reason sports titles don't sell well here. Anyway, considering the riot which occured after the Red Sox won the World Series, the comment isn't completely without merit.
She said, before making Gantz a shelf-worthy title and then calling Broken Saints pretentious. Seriously, if the sports fans are gonna trash the anime fans first, then what do you expect? I've never personally encountered jocks who harassed me, but there were plenty of dicks who wouldn't let me join their games. And of course, schools go easy on athletes by not requiring that they have to fulfill academic standards. So I could understand the kind of resentment brewing against someone who only has to bounce, punch, or kick a ball to get a full scholarship, while the rest of us have to write essays on topics no one cares about in hopes of getting one grand for a university which will probably cost 20 grand-if it's cheap. Especially when one of those "athletes" becomes President. Anyway, setting my bitterness aside, I agree it's not polite to bump into people and not say, "Excuse me." Especially people who could potentially kick your ass, if it wasn't for them being overweight and wearing body paint. Last edited by GATSU on Mon Aug 14, 2006 12:09 am; edited 4 times in total |

I really do find it interesting, after all the posts I've seen on this forum over time about how anime fans are misunderstood and how no one gives them a chance and people are quick to judge, it never ceases to amaze me how often the roles are reversed and how it all ends up the same way.
It's not really something that anime fans face alone, and it's not something they're all innocent of either. In reality it's sadly part of human nature, while not part of everyones nature it's not something that any one group is immune to. I'm an anime fan, and a baseball fan, I would have been caught right in the middle of such an event. I'm also a fan of NASCAR and can certainly make the case that I've received far more grief from that than I ever have for being an anime fan. Add to that I'm also a fan of country music and again it's something I hear negative comments made about far more than the fact I watch anime. It's really about tolerance and understanding. Some people don't understand what others see in something, so they belittle them because obviously since they don't see it there must be something wrong with it which then creates intolerance. The venom spreads to others as the dislike one person has in regards to it becomes tossed around as a generalization. Anime fans face a great deal of criticism, but they hardly have it the worst as some seem to think and they're hardly alone. Truthfully, chances are everyone is guilty of the same style of behaviour at some point as well. |

I loved Encyclopedia Brown when i was in elementary school! (No wonder Detective Conan entertains me )
On a different topic, It is really sad that it's still difficult for people to get along. However i think people like to feel superior by belittling other people's likes. It's sad. "Gap clothes"? |

Jesus christ, what in the hell does this mean? Does this mean you liked Broken Saints? Because that would be proof that you bought your ticket to crazytown a long, long time ago. |

Zac: I'm ok w/ Broken Saints. One day, I'll even actually finish an episode. But I just find it hilarious that Bamboo considers Gantz to be more intellectually stimulating. It's like calling Hostel "deep".

What about Broken Saints is "intellectually stimulating"? Because Gantz, while it is exploitation, has at least a deeply cynical message. There is SOMETHING there. Broken Saints is just poorly written garbage. It wants to be "deep" and "meaningful" but it can't, because the person who put it together doesn't actually know how to write. |

Considering the first few episodes of Broken Saints are about 7 minutes long, it doesn't say much for your attention span if you can't finish it. Have you actually seen Gantz in its entirety? Heck, even the first episode raises social issues. It is possible to watch a series beyond just the surface WOAHGUNS+CHIXXX and gather meaning from it. Just because something isn't cluttered with lengthy diatribes and dense soliloquys doesn't mean that it's any less meaningful than something that is. |

Sakechan:
It takes seven minutes for each pause between scenes and dialogue boxes to end. Of course, to be fair, that could have been attributed to my then-crappy comp's inability to handle flash cartoons beyond 1-2 mb without slowing down and crashing.
Faces of Death raises social issues, too. But that doesn't make it any less trashy or exploitive than Gantz. |

The thing is that I haven't seen it at any local anime stores, Best Buy, or Suncoast. I haven't gotten it because I haven't seen it at my local shelves, and haven't even attempted to order it online. So Gantz was the only "Shelf Worthy Title"... I'd never thought I'd hear that. But it was great... up until the ending. I thought Basilisk was shelf worthy, but different strokes for different folks. |

Boy, it seems like there's less and less Shelf-Worthy DVDs these days, but that's okay. I'm not too terribly interested in any of the Rental items, so I have no complaints about placement. And hey, Bamboo gave us a kitten to make up for AnswerMan holding back on them
And yeah, the young, crazy, Internet culture-addled East Coast fans seem to have an overwhelming need to defend themselves against supposed "threats" from the mainstream world. That baseball incident certainly is an interesting case study in anime fans vs. the rest of the world, though. I don't think you could have had a better controlled experiment for interaction between massive numbers of anime fans vs. mass numbers of "normals." |
