Tylor is definitely shelf worthy as far as I'm concerned. That show just makes me happy when I watch it.

Especially how one character keeps their love interest as a pet. Oh, Paco Paco, you poor ... girl. Girly man boy, you. Seeing how a group of out of control Marines hold a voluntary beauty contest instead of -something else, use your imagination if you please- is restrained. And it's still less sexualized then what Lt. Kim wore when she returned to her modeling career or Yumi and Emi's showcasing proper bath etiquette at the end of the series. Or Harumi doing basically anything job related. Can I object to men being portrayed as egotistical, muscle bound, animalistic neurotic woman haters? And they're drunks too, yeah! All the women are stuck with are the "civilized" and "proficient" labels. And the "hot" one, yes. And the most that the guys do is "respect them with their eyes" {Wow, men alone in the vastness of space, ogling the only women light years around, how unnatural...}, I don't know what to say. |

It's important to distinguish between "what the characters do" and "what the creators let the characters do." The Marines have a voluntary beauty contest, and the women volunteer, but all of that is controlled by the people who make the show.
I guess? I don't really know what you want me to say here. I mentioned that the series is still way more progressive than a ton of the shows that are released today, and that any of the eyebrow-raisers are a product of the times. These are just things that I noticed watching the show in 2013 that I didn't notice when I watched the show in 2000 as a teenager, or whenever I watched it. |

I first watched Tylor about 15 years ago and loved it. I last rewatched it a few years ago and still loved it. The show really is an absolute joy.
I thought it might be something special from the first episode when spoiler[Azalyn broke down in tears after delivering her address to the commanders, before quickly composing herself when she realised Dom was there.] It seemed so genuine and really got to me. Tylor has the most loveable cast in anime and is so much fun but it has real heart as well. |

I definitely think Shingu is oft overlooked. Not a show for everyone, not an action packed show either, but I loved the slow calculated pacing and how both the kid cast and the adult cast intersected. I also liked the cast, so that helps too. I wish more people would give it a shot, I remember rushing to get something from TRSI's epic bargain bin, and I felt the need for free shipping, so tacked this on, and what do you know, I liked it far far more than the show I had placed the damn order for. Shingu stayed in my collection, the show I placed the order for left.
Tylor is a damn fun series, glad I watched it. The OVA though, I'm rather "meh" on. I'm watching Patlabor right now, and it does remind me of Tylor from time to time, with a fun joking sort of cast. Also, TRSI's automated voice message system is freakin' Tylor, how awesome is that? |

Bamboo quick question. I have the original release of Captain Tylor from way back when it first came out on DVD. Now this newer lite box release is advertised as re-mastered. Does this new release look any better than the previous ones to warrant double dipping and re-buying the series again?
I'm kind of a sucker for the best quality if their is a obvious difference in quality, but if it only looks a tad better than I rather save my money. |

So, this remaster is essentially the same remaster that came out a few years ago, only repackaged into a single case (with spaces for 5 discs inside). In comparison to the very first release, the colors are a little brighter and there's a little less noise, but the differences really aren't that big. It's a super clean transfer, for sure, but I personally don't think you gain anything from double-dipping. |

I first watched Shingu a few years ago when it was still available On Demand. I thought it was from the 90's because of how it looked and paced itself.
A few quick facts I'd like to mention is that the music was composed by Yuji Ohno who's famous for doing music for Lupin the III. Another fact is that director Tatsu Sato (Shingu, and Nadesico) named the school where Hajime and Muryou go to "Misumaru Middle School" after Yurika Misumaru from Nadesico. I think Shingu is a good show if you look at it as a slice-of-life anime with sci-fi elements, but unfortunately people have misleading expectations because of the English subtitle "Secret of the Stellar Wars". Btw, a couple years ago, I was able to buy the thinpack release from shawnek on amazon for $15! Shawnek was my favorite third-party seller on amazon, so it's no surprise that when I found out about RightStuf, it became my favorite website to shop on, lol. I own both Shingu and Captain Tylor boxes featured here and have yet to watch them. After reading this article I will get on with that.

Was there anything other than Rikuo's change of heart (and use of Yura) that dropped the set to Rental status? It seemed to otherwise be a fairly glowing review.
Quite a few series on those shelves that we saw get axed after only a few volumes, if anything at all... *simmer* |

Tylor was shelf worthy until the staff developed brain cancer and decided to have him end up with cliche ass tsundere in Yuriko instead of the plucky Azalyn.
At least on the bright side, I hear in either the manga or LN he ends up with her. Still kills me to this day such a great show and great character ruined because of that, and it confirmed to me he was just a lucky idiot and not playing the fool if had such bad taste. |
