Lol why do some people anticipates Miyazaki's last film? The guy is 72 and he doesn't seem like he suffers any ill related health condition. Now that's a genius response!

It's because there's been several times where he's claimed he's making his last film, but it turns out to be not true.
But if what he claims is his last movie doesn't end up being so, does that mean that since he says this won't be his last movie, it actually will be? |

Hayao Miyazaki can't quit making movies because Ghibli still doesn't have a suitable successor lined up to take his place.

I believe Hiromasa Yonebayashi is that successor. And he's proven himself to be quite suitable if you ask me. Besides, after he finishes making films he'll likely still continue to pen scripts for the other directors. Although to be honest, I don't think that man will ever stop making anime films. At least not until he... well you know. :'( I don't even want to say it. |

I get the feeling if he ever does state any movie as his finale it will be a sequel to one of his more major works.

There is a successor to Hayao Miyazaki, but it's not in Studio Ghibli. It's Mamoru Hosoda from Studio Chizu (who formerly produced his movies in Madhouse)

Even if Miyazaki said it was his final work, no one would believe him at this point.
I have the same feeling precisely because he's staking out his own territory, making family films nobody else could make. Getting fired from Ghibli may ironically be the best evidence that he's the man to fill Miyazaki's shoes. |

Pretty much. Hosoda is the most critically acclaimed anime director working right now (his body of work over the last decade has also been more critically acclaimed than Miyazaki's). |
