I predict unending fonts of butthurt from people who think that the only good animation is anime in 3...2...1...

It was only screening, but not competing.

It would have been good to see at least one pick up an award.

The Berserk films aren't good enough to be award winners, so that's fine with me.

Well is this related strictly to film or tv as well. The fact that many anime never win anything is because most international awards only give out awards to film.

That being said, I think the Berserk films look terrible. Im surprised such a beloved franchise got relegated to really crappy cgi looking graphics. Or at least thats how the trailers made it look like.

If anything this suggests that Japan needs to step it up.

It is a bit disappointing but this nothing that shouldn't change anything. There just happened to be better animated films out there that weren't anime.

Maybe or they were just out beaten this year. I would start worrying when no anime starts winning any awards outside of the anime industry awards.

Looking at the award winners this is hardly a surprising result. There are a number of 3D productions in the list, and the 2D winners have a distinctly "Western" or "European" look.

Thinking back over 2012 I'd have a hard time picking any anime television series that I would say was distinctive or original. Shin Sekai Yori probably comes the closest followed by Shirokuma Cafe.

You'll notice, too, that most of the winners discuss social issues; works with themes about class, war and the environment seem to have done well. Those are not the kinds of animated stories that sell well among Japanese otaku these days.

So Annecy is like any other Indie Film competition?

I don't know if that's normal, because Animation and Anime aren't main stream, or stupid because I like anime.
