Correct answer to why there are no reruns:

Because most timeslots for anime on TV are paid for BY the production committee. So why in the world would you pay for another timeslot later?

Actually though there are plenty of places to see anime reruns, just not of anything brand new. Animax reruns old anime all the time, and I know that Dragonball Z was rerun on TV a while back on Fuji.
Majorly popular shows get rerun on TV occasionally, because *shock* they're popular and actually attract advertisers, unlike new anime which is almost invariably late night and effectively purchased time-slots.

In Japan if you miss an episode on TV there are a number of online and cellphone services that will let you watch earlier episodes on demand these days as well. So there's little need for reruns.

Nice timing on the discussion of the visual novels, what with the news just the other day of World End Economica picking up an official translation for purchase. That's such a low-key thing that I can't imagine it'll get too much attention, but it's still a pretty awesome thing to see.

Another thing to point out about 'clip shows' is that they're hardly unique to animation, either - anyone who endured '70s and '80s sitcoms can no doubt point to their favorite dozen examples. It's a money-saving measure like any other, giving the appearance of actual new content without the costs involved.

Light Novels aimed at a female audience are not very popular in Japan for some reason I can't understand. Crying or Very sad So they are never adapted into anime. The best we can hope for is manga adaptations. And from those manga adaptations I can tell that the light novels are quite good. Anyway, why I'm saying this is, if someone brought some LN's aimed at females to the west like Saiunkoku Monogatari or Earl and Fairy, I'd be overjoyed.

As for Visual Novels, I'm all for more Otome Games to come to the west. Hakuoki was great and now I look forward to Sweet Fuse and and the sequel to Hakuoki too. I do hope that Sweet Fuse is also a success and they bring Wand of Fortune, Juuza Engi and Brothers Conflict to the west.

So, I, am VERY interested though LN's aimed at females will never come to the US... Crying or Very sad

Oh, I would be so happy if more light novels got released here.
Besides the aforementioned Baccano and Story of Saiunkoku, someone should release the novels for Durarara!!, The Devil is a Part Timer (which I'm loving the anime of this season), and I would love it if someone finished releasing the Full Metal Panic novels.
And of course, eternal thanks to Yen Press for releasing the Haruhi Suzumiya, Spice & Wolf, and Book Girl novels. We don't even have the anime for Book Girl! (Yen Press owns my soul, what with those plus Thermae Romae, A Bride's Story, Soulless (!!!!!), Cirque du Freak, and simpler things like Black Butler and Soul Eater.)

When people watch their anime shows, they want to talk about it, with people who watched it also. Having to play with spoiler tags, means figuring out what could be considered a spoiler and then hiding them with tags. This hampers active discussion.

If you don't want to be spoiled, then you shouldn't be reading the discussion threads, but rather reading the preview and review threads.

The reader should be the one who keeps away from discussion threads, rather than foisting that responsibility on the poster.

Am I interested in reading LNs? Hell yes! I love to read and even if they're not the best--LNs could be a great thing to blow through when class is boring me to death and I have nothing better to do. I do like to import them--but I would definitely like to READ them as well, you know?

Maybe I'll actually send in a detailed response this time.

By the way, studies have shown that getting spoiled actually INCREASES your enjoyment of fictional works.

Maybe Japanese TV networks are secretly being operated and controlled by a race of interdimensional ogres, and if they happen to even accidentally see a show they've already watched, their immune system boils into an extremely caustic fluid that explodes and burns everything in sight? That sounds plausible.

Someone get the harisen and hit Brian with it please. XD

Depends on the person. Sometimes if I get spoiled, I'll just drop an anime or VN right there, especially if its very plot driven... the entire thing becomes pointless if its all building up to a specific plot point you already know.

I've read a few light novels before, for Slayers and Genshiken, and TBH I didn't find them all that enjoyable. I suppose I found it hard to enjoy those sorts of series without the visual elements carrying a larger part of the story-telling load, as in manga and anime. They actually sort of felt like I was reading a less engaging fan-fic version of the series' universe.

Another reason we don't see a lot of light novels is simply they cost more to translate. There is way, way more text in one then a manga. And they tend sell from poorly to okay, so getting the money back from the investment can be a losing gamble.

I'm one of those people who gains some enjoyment from being spoiled. I was late to Bioshock Infinite, and went in knowing all of the big twists. There was all sorts of irony and foreshadowing that I would never have appreciated if I didn't know the spoilers, as I would never have remembered the dialogue and events if I found out the twists through playing.

Ditto for the big internet shit-flip spoiler on this season's Game of Thrones. I hadn't read the books, but I knew what was coming so my suspense level was through the roof for that entire episode. After all, just because you know something is going to happen doesn't mean you know how it's going to happen, how it's going to look or feel.

Thats good for you, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't respect the feelings of those of us who DON'T like being spoiled.

My back-of-envelope calculations suggest that -- translators being in shorter supply than writers -- it'd actually be cheaper to order a novel written from scratch than to get a pre-exiting one translated.

From a commission stand point, I can imagine what a just a page of text would cost. Let's say a good 15 lines for a page of manga comes out to $0.80, a page of pure text would be several times that. Either you have someone who does it for salaried work, by the line commission, or does it for free and fun.
