I was re-viewing Full Metal Panic and I saw something that made me wonder just how many errors have I not noticed due to either my lack of comprehension of the japanese language, or just laziness, in other anime I have seen, or have yet to see.
What alerted me, was Sousuke and Kurz were in piece of junk pick-up truck and Kurz told Sousuke to open the glove compartment you'll find the mapple. Either I don't know what a mapple is, or he was saying he'd find the map. I also noticed where the translator for the subtitles, didn't know as much technical language as the screenwriter(s). I don't remember what exactly that was. But it was obvious to me, being a one time sailor. Also, could someone tell me why I saw, I think, 3 different spellings for Tuatha de Danaan, and 2 for Teletha Testarossa? All from watching the series, not from other sources? The continuity director was fired? And if we are really going to nit-pick, the Tuatha de Danaan, would have many more watertight doors, than the one separating forward and aft sections. The Titanic had a similar design problem, and we know what happened there, eh? |

I agree on all counts jaybug. There's already been a discussion on why the names are spelt and misspelt all the time and the reason for Tessa's misspelling comes from the kanji and pronunciation. PM abundai for more details. At the time the fansubs were done the english spelling was not official and that's why it's all over the place. There is only one reason that the Tuatha de Danaan was misspelt and that was probably that the subbers had no idea that it is a word from mythology. They probably thought it was made up. Other than that the "mapple" could have just been a good old typo? Maybe Kurz asked Sousuke to get the map that was printed on an apple, hence it was called a mapple.

First, I haven't seen FMP. So I may be wrong.
What's tessa? テレサ・テスタロッサ isn't written in kanji. テレサ would be Theresa if it's a girl's name and テスタロッサ would be Testarossa(Italian?). Testarossa sounds like a car(FERRARI TESTAROSSA) to me. Tuatha de Danaan's correct spelling is Tuatha Dé Danann??? The second "t" in Tuatha is silent? でないとトゥアハーはおかしいから。 I found this from an English site. "In Irish-Celtic mythology, the Tuatha Dé Danann ('People of the goddess Danu') are the Irish race of gods, founded by the goddess Danu. These gods, who originally lived on 'the islands in the west', had perfected the use of magic." Am I wrong? 面白そうだから、ちょっと参加してみました。 |

I didn't mean to talk about fansubs, or anything but what is on the liscensed DVD from ADV. In those discs are several versions of Teletha, Tuatha, and one mapple. I am not trying to count magazines, or whatever, I know that thanks to spellcheck, more words than ever are mispelled in print.

I dunno if "translation errors" is what this is. Like you said, there are typos by the bucketload in the world. I just found a data sheet on paint from an enormous company that said "pastel" where it should have said "paste". Oops. You'd think they'd pay people to read that stuff. Oh wait, that's me.
But as far as technical talk, I wonder if somebody made a conscious decision to tone it back some. It happens. Not necessarily a good thing, or even a bad thing, but it happens. I have recollections of it going the other way, too. Some airplane anime where they were using not so technical terms in the Japanese, and using the technical terms in the dub. Since there are only about four words of Japanese I would recognize, those said when shooting stuff from airplanes being among them. (Go ahead and ask, I can't think of a single one right now. Hm...) And heck, I've seen a half dozen spellings of Tuatha de, with or without the Danann, in scholarly works by English-speaking authors. It's tough to transliterate phonetically, especially when the sounds you're working with (like Gaelic double consonants, or the famous l/r thing in Japanese) don't really exist in your language. It drove me a little nuts that they pronounced Nausicaa the way they did in the Disney dub, instead of going back to the Greek that it was originally taken from. But I know, I'm the freak there. Which is to say I'd give the translators a bit of a break. But yes, you'd think they'd have an editor to catch that sort of thing and make it consistent, whatever they picked. And how would mapple even get through a spell check? |

I have a feeling that mapple is a direct transliteration. That a court reporter took down in shorthand or something the japanese word and wrote it mapple, forgetting that the word is map. If the word was golf, we would have seen gorofu, right?
I do give credit when the anime is doing an air traffic controller to pilot scene, and they use english, as all the world's air traffic is supposed to use. It is kind of funny to see the english sub, while listening to english being spoken. |

Might I add that "spelt" is not a word and the use of "misspelt" is very ironic? I've seen it quite a few times in this thread. The word is "spelled," people.

Yes, sorry about that. When you said the mistakes I thought immediatly that you were talking about a fansub. Also, I think the Tuatha does have many more watertight doors but they only sealed the ones that were right across the middle of the ship, because they wanted to seal the crew in the hangar and the whole upper-rear of the Tuatha is the hangar.

Um, I can only find "spelt" meaning "the past tense of spell or a hardy wheat growing in Europe" and "spelled" meaning "to take someone's turn at work, giving them a "spell"". Can you state your source? |

Well that is true I am glad when they do to that. It's funny when in the original japanese version they have an english voice. Such as in Speed Grapher when the spoiler[US government was dealing with the Japanese] or in Samurai Champloo with the baseball episodes, the sub playing while English is spoken is kinda funny.
