The main reason I watch anime (as well as listen to music, play video games, watch movies, read graphic novels) is the hope that I'll be emotionally moved by the end. I don't just mean tearing up from a sad movie or show, it could be the feeling of emotional attachment to the characters and actually caring about what happens to them. Or it could be that you are emotionally moved by the moral of the story.
Anyway, in anime this has unforuntately happened only a small amount of times for me: - Cowboy Bebop (Regardless of what others think, I love the characters and I got so caught up in learning a little bit more about them and watching them interact with eachother that I never noticed how episodic the show was) - Grave of the Fireflies (no explanation needed) - Kino's Journey (Kino and her motorbike had some wonderful interactions with eachother. They were both interesting and extremely likable and I felt like I was going on a journey with them) - My Neighbor Totoro (the kids were animated so well and the movie as a whole really reminded me of why it is so wonderful to be a child) - Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (For a movie, the characters were so rich that their relationships with eachother were immediately understood. The way they moved and spoke to eachother were just brilliant) - Now and Then, Here and There (Sara's story was so powerful and moving) Now list yours ![]() |

neon genesis evangelion - i just related way too much to shinji and the emotions that he went through; and he went through a lot, i basically went through. That show was a real downer and great
![]() ![]() Full Metal Alchemist - The life the ed and al had to live and the way they tried to help each other and was living for the sake of the other. The relationship they had with everyone and the way they lost some of their friends was very emotiona to me(Hughes) Full Metal Panic - I don't know why, it just really messed with my emotions. Elfen Lied - The amount of story in such a short amount of time and the way it was presented was amazing. Fruit Basket - The way all the character interacted seemed special Wolfs Rain - Can't explain in words, just watch it. Cowboy Bebop - The way the story was told just got to me. Throughout the show very little story seeped through with a few plot driven eps, and then bam your blown away with plot and plot twists like crazy. It really hooked me and made me feel that something like this could really happen. Macross 7 - I'm finishing it tonight so i'm not going to say anything yet, but i feel quite atached to the main character. and many more, I guess i'm easily moved. |

I have felt depressed about everytime I finished ANY story that I liked. Any book I read, any movie I watched, every anime show I watched. They all made me sad to lose the characters/world whatever at some point. So yes, I have emotional attachment to many animes I watch (but not because they are ANIME)
Yeah, of course, I'm just a nostaligic, melancholic loser slob. Stories just drag me in, just to let me down somewhere near the end. I've always wanted to be a writer/storyteller/moviemaker/poet/whatever... But sadly my talent lies in science and mathematics, far, oh so far away from that area. With that said, I think I'll go back to watching Last Exile ![]() |

epixel...I'm not YOUR twin, am I?
I could've said the exact same thing and it be true 100%, or as much as anything can be true. I have to say though, movies usually don't leave me wanting more. It's short, if it is any good it explained a plot, maybe had some comedy or action, and it's over. I feel much more worried about a certain character or two or the plot overall in the movie whereas in anime(because they are so much longer), I feel more bound to the world a particular show will create. I hate leaving it after the show completes. Books hold the same interest for me but I have to say...I haven't read much lately. Picture of Dorian Gray and Dracula, neither of which I finished. I was so close with Dracula...but after stopping for awhile, I couldn't pick it up again 4/5 into it. I usually don't have many specific feelings over completion of any of these materials. They're universal on this matter except on things that I absolutely loved: FLCL, Honey & Clover and a handful of others. The feelings I have for something that I don't want to give up might not be the best in the world, but realizing I've found something that expresses those feelings in me is good I suppose. |

Fruits Basket: It connects to me because some of the stuff in there I wish would happen to me.
Weed: Because of the themes of honor, dignity, and sacrificing your self, almost makes me cry. Tsukihime: No parents ![]() |

You know that feeling of closure with a hint of sadness you get when you finish a story? Yea. I get that alot.
One Piece - obviously haven't "finished" it yet, but god some parts made me a full grown man even want to cry a little spoiler[first time I watched Bellemere die, or the Sakura bloom on drum island, or even Robin's past in the manga, sad sad] I would list more examples but I'm lazy. ![]() A good anime/manga/story will get you caring for and loving the characters, and thinking of them almost like real people... even tho they aren't.... are they? |

Well, I don't find it happens often with anime unfortunately, not as much as it does with literature and films and even some recent television shows amazingly enough. But it has happened, and of the examples I can think of off hand I'd say:
Gunslinger Girl - It's hard to get in to this series and not feel something at the end. It's so detailed in both the lives of the girls and their personalities. It touches on so many issues both philosophical and psychological and I felt it did so well. Figure 17 - This series has some of the best character depth I've ever seen, especially in regards to emotion. Seeing the effects of the series events on Tsubasa and how she grew through the hardships was very satisfying, even though not everything turned out on a happy note. Wolf's Rain - This is a tough one to explain, the characters and the symbolism were very powerful though and despite the characters having somewhat generic personalities it still managed to work well despite that. Haibane Renmei - This list wouldn't be complete without this one because the whole series revolves around some fairly emotional events and moral undertones. Chrono Crusade - I'm not sure it's necessarily due to the moral of the story, but it's a hard series to watch through to the end without some emotion at the end because the end itself. Of course, emotion isn't always a necessity of me to enjoy a series. A few of my favorites, like Scrapped Princess and Last Exile and other greats like Cowboy Bebop and Kino's Journey didn't really effect me emotionally that much but I still greatly enjoyed the series. And yes, Cowboy Bebop just didn't have much an effect on me emotionally, can't really quite say why since it seems so many others are struck by it. |

Yeah id say this is an important part in a series that gets anywhere NEAR my top 10. Series i remember for emotional content are ...
Last Exile : Watch IT lol Rah Xephon : the story heavily focussed on the characters emotional jouneys therefore feeling attached to them was inevitable. Peacemaker Kurogane : i liked the honor/humanity conflict and how it played out. Samurai Champloo : The characters where plain likeable nuff said. alot of people like full metal alchemist but for some reason the characters all came out a bit .. resolute like even if they where emotionaly against it theyd still keep doing what they did as characters the emotional play was there it just didn't really "affect" the story dont get me wrong i loved fma but i consider this fact a slight tarnish on its crown ![]() |

Well, most of the Anime I watched so far, did touch me, mostly because of the story, the characters and how they evolve in the story.
Shinji Ikari (Neon Genesis Evangelion), this guy ought to be a real animated version of myself. I picture myself as a sore loser in real life, only crying over my fate and not really fighting to take control of my life to improve it. War (Gundam Seed) is something I really hate, I really like the moral behind GS. Kill someone son/daughter/wife/ husband/mother/father, and people close to him, will want to hurt you. Take a look at israel and palestine, and what this hizbullah guy said, "Our Children won't be the only one to die". Anyone got those guys address, I want to send them GS dvd sets, maybe they will understand that, war is pointless, there is no winner in it, just casualties, nothing else. |

ok I've hardly ever posted on here before and i KNOW im probably going to get into trouble about this but dont project morality from your favorite shows onto situations you obviously have no understanding of, The palastininions fight or die theres no choice for them they have no passports or recognised nationalities and the isrealis force them further towards unlivable desert every week by continuing to build settlements in internationally accepted palastinian land. So they have two choices either fight or starve in the desert Everyone in that part of the world knows what theyre doing but aslong as america keeps sending them gear over theres nothing much anyone can do about it.
and as for your inevitable question i am half arab and half English not an enviable race to be in this point in time i dont hate any breed of people but if i could do ONE thing id slap every westener who blindly believes what they see on the news after watching SO MANY anime that warn of the dangers of believing what your told and holding comfort in ignorance. |

WOW. If that ain't offtopic I don't know what is. I'm guessing it was a reaction to something someone posted... but whatever. Just so you know we don't all let ourselves get brainwashed by FOXNews and Rightwing media, I myself watch/listen to BBC world to get a much clearer view on what's really happening. |

I suggest that you go read this. When you get to page 2 or 3, you will see that it's a perfect example of how to spiral into a neverending political debate in a forum such as this one. I gracefully created this masterpiece of controversy and heated discussion. ( ![]() |

Well at least be rest assured I agree with you. Japanese news is a lot less censored (for issues on the Middle East, at least). They're just extremely pissed because we keep...killing them (well, helping Israel to since we're allied with them because...they're Jewish and lucrative). Sadly, I stopped caring about it a while back, since voting is pretty much all I can do or care to do right now. Anyway, as someone mentioned before, Chrono Crusade is one where I got unusually attached to the characters. I guess the friendship of two completely different individuals despite the disapproval from others made it really touching, even if the storyline wasn't top-notch. The ending of course is the thing everyone OMGs over. You should check it out just for the emotional joyride. |
