I wanted to report what 'tseems like an error here on what the "translated" version of this new Gainax production is. The "maiking breakthrough" thing is, as I believe, only some sort of engrish error done on the official site when trying to describe the anime as "making breakthrough". They mispelled "making" into "maiking". Now it's been corrected: http://www.gurren-lagann.net/image/making.gif Even though "Toppa" can mean breakthrough, Tengen doesn't have anything to do with "maiking". AFAIK is the name of one of the japanese imperial eras, like the Heisei one. I would venture a translation as something like "Post-tengen", although I'm not quite sure about it. I'd also suggest leaving the original name "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann" as the anime name. Hope this helped. |

It seems that it depends...though you are at least partially correct. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tengen |

I didn't know the Go reference, or at least the "center or origin of heaven" on the wikipedia article, which makes a lot more sense than the imperial era. But one thing is clear, it's not "Maiking break-through".

Oh, no—I'm not arguing about that. Only that "Tengen" is ambiguous (and not having seen the series in question, I'm not in a position to judge). |
