So: manga on Kickstarter. Instead of making a new thread every time a new one pops up, I figured we could just consolidate into one thread.

In the vein of "more previously-Tokyopop OEL creators are getting to publish their stuff finally," there's apparently one running for Off*Beat that's almost reached their goal. Good for them!

And ANN just announced this one: Osamu Tezuka's The Crater. Doesn't surprise me that we're getting more Tezuka this way, since DMP has clearly proved that that model works. However, I kind of don't like the wording in the ANN article.
Quote:
Kansai Club is not planning to release the book through physical or online retailers. The publisher will launch a Kickstarter campaign to take pre-orders for the book. Any copies not sold through Kickstarter will be sold at the company's booth at Florida's Supercon convention on July 5.

I think running a Kickstarter campaign just for "preorders" is kind of ridiculous and misses the point of Kickstarter. Kickstarter should be for funding things that you couldn't do otherwise, not for selling something you've already made. It sounds like these guys have already got production finished, and just see Kickstarter as a sort of online marketplace. :/

Well, does that have Osamu Tezuka's name on it? Yeah, I'll obviously be buying that. Because I will buy anything with his name on it. Glad they always seem to do well on Kickstarter though.

*EDIT Oh man, so I just read that they're only doing 2000 copies and since I don't live in Florida, it's practically the only way to get it? Yikes! Yeah, I'll need to make this my very first kickstarter backing!

A lot of cartoonists using Kickstarter already have production done in some cases in the sense that its already drawn/scanned and sometimes even composited as a print ready file. When your self publishing, you do all that work yourself- its the printing that's the big cost outside of your time.
I assume these folks have done the production work but are doing the Kickstarter to pay for the printing & possibly some of Tezuka Pro's fees- that'd be a pretty normal thing in terms of comic kickstarters.

IMO, I like KS's like this best- when all the works done its pretty much sure you'll get the book. That said, too bad they're not going for at least comic shop distribution- I've purchased some comics back by KS that way.

I'm not sure why they'd even need a kickstarter for a Tezuka manga. He may have an enormous body of work, but his works sell well enough over here that it's already very likely for the more quality ones to be brought over.

Though I guess that it's more to launch a two-person company, and a Tezuka title is probably a strong one to start with.

Just because Tezuka is critically acclaimed doesn't mean it sells well. There's lots of his stuff that is out of print, and the audience for it is not the typical shonen jump crowd.

USA had only a handful of the most famous Tezuka's titles and none of them can be called bestseller. Controversial themes, graphic far from anything that you expect from manga, the fact that the latter sometimes don't "match" the former also doesn't help to sell them.

Actually, Buddha has been a best-seller. Princess Knight and Black Jack were also on the NYTimes Best Seller list.

And on a per volume basis Apollo's Song omnibus was the best-selling Tezuka selling well into 5-digits.

But we agree not all his works sell well but also there are many Shonen Jump titles that are OOP.

The Crater is up! I would try and get it in asap, their website said that the first 350 books via kickstarter will get Ambassador Magma animation cels, I shall get to see if this is true. It's actually already made its goal, which is no surprise cus all Tezuka things seem to. Definitely will come with three art prints though.

Also, limited to 2000 numbered copies, guys!

Thanks for the heads up, classicalzawa! I've been waiting for the Kickstarter to be up and running since I learned about it, so I backed it right away. It looks like I was number 342, so I guess I just squeaked into getting a cel. It's nice to see that there's a good number of backers already. I'm always excited for more Tezuka!

The dude from Kansai expresses their motivation and what they're trying to accomplish here.
The fact that they have even dared to go after it is something I'm happy to support. And if their success with it allows them to go after more titles or at the very least spur on some competition and or have others follow suit then that's even better.

I put my pledge in a couple of days ago. Looking forward to seeing what they do with it.

Oh wow! In this http://thekansaiclub.com/?p=113 they promise a cel to the first 350! Impressive that it's expanded to 500. I guess they weren't able to advertise this fact because of KS rules or something?

Anyway, it'll be my first cel too. That's so cool!
