They should have released it earlier not later. Later and it would have been eaten alive!
That and They have taken far too long to release anything for it.
When was Nintendo their most successful? when they released a Mario Game at launch
Nes - Super Mario Bros
Snes - Super Mario World + Super Mario Allstars
N64 - Mario 64
For me its really that simple. If they had a brand new Mario game at launch then the system would have sold and they could build from there. But just like the 3DS they had NOTHING!?! Makes no sense to me at all. Its short sighted ignorance. Even the Wii had Zelda to compliment the Wii Sports craze. So it still had a major title at launch.
Despite all its success the Wii could turn out to be the moment Nintendo got it wrong, as they bet big on something that everyone could tell in the long run wouldn't last. The Wii U is so badly concieved i just don't understand what they were thinking. Underpowered and lacking any of the games to compensate for that. They had better hope they aren't too late with the next Mario and Zelda to save them.
But honestly they had a year before Sony and Microsoft came out. They knew they would have at least that for a few years. Why on earth didn't they get their s**t together and get Mario,Zelda and SSB out the door in that timeframe or at least oen of them rather than none at all. Because now they are out of the picture pretty much this holiday. Even if one of those games comes out this holiday it wont be a system seller because everyone will be buying PS4 and Xbox.
I would like Nintendo to go software only as they are seemingly no longer capable to do both games and Hardware to the standard needed.

Honestly, does anyone even care about a Wii U? I plan to get a 3DS, but I don't think Ill ever commit to another home console after the failure of the Wii

If Nintendo releases some good platform exclusives, plenty of people will be interested. I for one am excited for the SMT x Fire Emblem cross game they teased, but so far that alone is not enough for me to get a Wii U.
Nintendo may not have the home console market share they used to, but their handheld market share is still as solid as always. The 3DS is booming with amazing games in 2013 and is absolutely dominating the Vita in sales and exclusives.

I think they might make some of their losses back this October, I sure plan to buy a 3DS for Pokemon. Pokemon is kinda a sure money thing and so far it's the only thing I see as a system seller for the 3DS (sure why I plan to buy one).
Wii U on the other hand...well Earthbound might help, but it just needs good games. Earthbound isn't enough for me to get a Wii U though. Seeing how much the Wii disappointed hard core gamers makes them not want to buy a Wii and I think the novelty of the Wii has ran out for non-gamers. Or they're still fine with Wii bowling leagues and don't need a Wii U for that. And I still get Netflix on my Wii, it's half the reason I even keep the damn thing.

Pokemon is losing its popularity, ever since the introduction of Pokemon DPP. Pokemon HGSS was fairly popular though, since it brought back some nostalgia for many people and had lots of content, but it's steadily dropping with Gen V and the upcoming Gen VI games. And they're ruining Mewtwo.

how could they even think releasing the Wii U without a major game headliner would be a good idea? No Zelda/No Pikmin until almost a year AFTER launch and their touted Mario game is just an upgraded version of the Wii's New Super Mario Bros. There was nothing to be excited about for the Wii U's launch. The system might see a small revival when Zelda/Pikmin come out but they've pretty much already doomed this one as well.

Are they? Are they really? I never knew giving a Pokemon a new forme was ruining it.
Anyway, I am planning on getting a 3DS for the new Pokemon game. The only reason I stayed away from it is mostly because I think 3D is a lame gimmick, that was overused at the time people were... well, overusing it.

Maa... Not like I didn't expect this. But it is a little surprising, considering the 3DS is always on the top of the Famitsu sales charts every single week, with the PS3 trailing slightly behind. I just feel like they're adding too many nick-nacks onto the console, so I can't really feel like I want something so gaudy... PS3 please.
Anyway, if they make a Pretty Rhythm game with scannable capabilities for Prism Stones, I'M IN. GIVE ME A WII U.

Uh, considering Diamond and Pearl sold more than Heart Gold and Soul Silver (hell, Black and White sold more than HG and SS) I think you're speaking outside of blind nostalgia for the old generation and ignoring the success of the recent ones. Especially with comments like "nostalgia" and "ruined Mewtwo".
Anyway, I'll wait a year or two before I call for the doom of the Wii-U. People said the same thing about the 3DS when it had a slow start and look at it now. Judging a console before a year even passes is stupid.

I wonder if the Wii U is going to pull a 3DS where it started off weak but got much stronger once a steady stream of wanted games arrived. I am still intrigued on that "SMT x Fire Emblem" they're planning and SO interested in Monolith's upcoming RPG game which I'm banking it'll look absolutely gorgeous.

I agree, I mean the games they showed off on the Nintendo Directs looked incredible. I don't care it if they don't look as shiny as whatever Microsony pulls out, I'm going to buy Mario, Zelda, and whatever other great games that the console gets when I get one. Right now it has NSMBU, which looked pretty awesome to me, but there isn't a whole lot other than that yet. Once it gets a steady stream of games it will be great, just like the 3DS
And people keep exagerating that the Wii was a failure. It sold a ton. Did it have plenty of shovelware? You bet it did. But it also had Muramasa, Okami, SSB Brawl, Metroid, 2 Zeldas, 2 Mario Galaxies, Mario Kart, No More Heroes, Xenoblade, and I can go on. It was well worth owning.

As a more casual gamer nowadays, I've never played the Wii, or even wanted one, but I've had a DS for a number of years, and plan on buying the 3DS in the fall for the new Pokemon game. It's easy to see that Pokemon X and Y will be the best-selling 3DS games by a mile.
I also plan on buying Bravely Default when it comes out the following year. Being by the author of Steins;Gate, I doubt I'll dislike it. I may eventually get Ocarina of Time 3D for the nostalgia, and there are a couple other games I'm looking at too. The Wii/Wii-U just doesn't have that kind of appeal for me.

Steam just makes it so much easier (and cheaper!) for me to be a PC gamer. Tons and tons of choices and most of them of decent quality for cheap. I don't see myself ever owning any console in the near future.
That said, I'm not surprised by this news at all. I do think it would be in Nintendo's best interest to focus more on their handheld market but we will see if the Wii U picks up at all as games eventually are released.
