I wonder if he liked it, cus the Fiat from Cagliostro was there, even though Lasseter denies the connection.

Well, if Miyazaki says he liked it, that's good enough for me. One of the perks of reaching the pinnacle of an industry like he has is that you can be as honest as you want-if he hadn't liked Cars, he's under no obligation to say he did (he probably wouldn't have said "wow, that sucked" or anything, but he certainly wouldn't have told Lasseter he "got tears.")

If he noticed the Fiat, I'm sure he took it as an homage. It's not the first time animators have put little tributes to his work in their films, after all.

Being a huge fan of Miyazaki, even if the fact that he liked the lastest Pixar production will not make me go se the movie. I've seen traillers, teasers and synopsis and i'm still not impress by what "Cars" is. Lately the quality of the stories of the american cartoon movies made by Pixar (or Dreamworks) is getting worse while the animation it's getting better.
And in another note, it's tough to be a Miyazaki relative and go to the same business has him. All this comparison between father and son doesn't bonds well. I feel pity for Goro, but he should expect that sonner or later this would happen.

Personally, I'm hoping for a Shinji/Gendo creative tension.

I think the Fiat 500's there more because it's emblematic of Italy circs 1960, the same way the Volkswagen Beetle is eblematic of mid-20th century Germany.

That's the same reason it was included in Cagliostro in the first place.

If you're choosing an unglamourous Italian car to represent your typical Italian commoner, it's the most obvious choice.

It's a measure of Miyazaki's talent that his version of Lupin was great, even though he made important changes to the character and mood of the original series (for anime versions closer to the feel of the original manga, see the 1969 promo, the early episodes of the 1971 series, or the first movie).

I think it's more directed towards the otakus who think along the lines of: "not anime = teh suck"

(btw, i liked Cars. i thought it was a decent western animation let alone a Hollywood movie for a change...)

Let's not forget the importance of mentor animator Yasuo Otsuka for mechanics and action-sequences in many of the early tv-series and movies Miyazaki was involved.
