Would someone mind briefly explaining the different incarnations of Train Man and how they're related? It looks like Viz and Del Rey are releasing two different Train Man manga a month apart. What's the most concise way to distinguish them?

I was going to ask the same thing. I heard there were four. And which ones are being released here?

Here is how the whole densha story went.
2ch threads -> Novel (collection of the 2ch threads and pruned down to just the relevant story) Novel -> Movie (Truest to the real story version of the novel from my understanding..) Novel -> Manga (these widly vary, see below) Novel -> Jdrama (Stays true to the story for the first 1/2, diverges in the 2nd half. Over exaggurated and filled with inside jokes.) Regarding the manga. I've only read the first volumes of 2 of the four (months ago) and own parts of the other two so I might be a little off, but they are all very similar except in 4 ways. They are basically retellings of the story or a related/similar version of the story from what I can tell except: 1)They all have different art. This ranges from "Good" to "UGH shoot me now". 2) They all have different subtitles and these are the easiest way to tell them apart.. It is too bad the companies are dropping these. 3) They have different moods. The moe one is a little more "angsty". The other one is more "go otaku go!" etc. See disclaimer about how much i've read and which ones below. 4) They are all different stories. They are all based on the story or a similar story of a guy who meets a girl and goes to 2ch for help. Own and read the first volume: The one Viz owns, (the art is horrible.) and seems to diverge from the real story. The "moe"fied version of the real story one. Own and not read: This one and this one And the press release is filled with errors.... IRC websites don't exist. 2ch is a forum/bbs/message board. IRC is a chat room. etc etc. |

I'd so buy the TV series on DVD. That rocked hardcore.
I guess I should see the movie, too. |

Yeah, I'd love a good release of the TV series. Could care less about the movie though. I imagine though that the music rights to the TV series would make it very difficult to deal with. |

Thank goddness.
I saw 98% of this movie raw on a Japanese VHS. It was good even without subtitles. But you know, it will probably be much better translated. *Crosses fingers* PLEASE COME TO MY CITY, TRAINMAN! |

Great news! To be honest, I really hated the Train Man TV series, it was just way too over-the-top, silly and long. I heard the movie is a little more serious and obviously shorter, which is the kinda Train Man I was looking for. :)

I liked the TV series BECAUSE it was over the top. It was kind of like absurdist theatre, or something. Also, the Daikon IV inspired opening is pure gold.

In fact, there's also an OAV adaptation that I dare not talk about. |

It was over the top, and I couldn't stop watching. At the same time, it was still a painful experience. It's just a shame that the main character never actually grew. If he had stopped stuttering and crying around the girl by the end, I might be willing to watch it again. Now the movie, on the other hand, I can deal with. |

I *loved* the TV show. Unfortunately, I'm aware that if a company does try to bring it over the music would be a (I'm sorry for this pun) trainwreck. From the Imperial March to "Dragostea Din Tei" to even "Twilight," any licensor would have a lot of trouble trying to bring over Densha Otoko. We'll just have to settle for the Getsumen Toheiki Miina OVA.

'fraid I'd have to disagree with you on Hidenori Hara- I'm a huge fan of his, and he does some good work on DO, I've got all four volums of the original tankubon. Hermes especially is cute. (Hara always draws cute girls ? Widya Santoso |
