I don't understand these numbers. Does it mean that 1.9% of the country watched the episode?

From the article.

in Osaka's Kansai area and earned a 1.4%. It then aired on April 5 on TBS in Tokyo's Kanto area and earned a 1.9%.

That's two specific areas, not the entire country.

It's always interesting to note that the anime the play in the entire country are the more mainstream friendly shows, whereas your late night stuff only plays in the major urban centers, and likely not even all of them.

If the ratings in Japan work like in other country's it's usually for example 1.9% of those watching TV at that time.

Many Japanese in the rural areas are actually in the same boat as us in regards to getting anime, especially stuff that NicoNico doesn't pick up.. they need to resort to downloading the anime to watch it if it never airs on their local stations.

These number mean it got quite good ratings for a late night anime.

This numbers are more common for Noitamina or early morning anime.

Eh, Vividred did a 3.9% in the same anime block last year, so I think that block itself just gets higher ratings than most. Its not really that impressive to me.

Its out of the norm, hence news worth mentioning, otherwise you would not have seen it here in the first place.

Vividred did it too and was mentioned accordingly. Its that these series had a good start, its not the block. Vividred aired even earlier, Devil survivor is @ 2 am, so not even the same time slot.

If it maintains the higher than usual rating is to be seen yet.

And Vividred's sales numbers ended up not being anything particularly amazing, so the ratings won't necessarily mean anything in the long run and in ways that matter. What will matter is how the discs sell, and presumably additional sales of the game as well.

Indeed, again the point is that is had a good start with higher rating for an anime that airs at 2 am.

Ratings do not matter for late night anime, disc sales do, no doubt.

SMT games dont really need the extra boost but it should be more than welcome if it increases them for the upcoming 3ds version.

And yep, vividred disc sales were not impressive, the hype went down accordingly. Very Happy

Those ratings are comparatively ok. Not great compared to the non-late-night shounen shows, but better than most late night anime.

However it should be noted that even it's just measuring two regions, the ratings do not measure actual viewership. The ratings system depends on volunteers and does not capture DVR usage, so it is especially inaccurate for late night shows. (See my previous post for details)

It's not. In Japan, it's based on the entire population, whether they're watching TV or not. In this case, since these are regional stations, not national, it's the population of their broadcast zones.

*learns a lot about the Japanese rating system by following tokusatsu shows*

Exactly. So 1.9% of the broadcast area watched it that night. Even if they did 0.4% better than average, for the premiere night I think its not too great. I'd say this show is average at best according to the ratings

The "whether they're watching tv or not" part is true (or else late-night series would have higher ratings, since not many people are watching tv at 2am).
But just to clarify, they don't actually measure up the entire population, the rating is a regional estimate based on a limited number of households who actually have Video Research getting info from their tv sets. In this way, it's similar to how Nielsen works.

You mean the first episode of this show. Since the ratings average often rises or drops along the season, it's too soon to say that.

this show is TERRIBAD.

well, I guess it's not that bad.

but probably, it's like 2 and 1/2 men
people are just tuning in to see what's going on since the actual APP is popular
the numbers will probably drop soon
