You know, I was wondering what makes anime produced since the millenia seem so much different that anime form the 1990's. And it struck me, the paint. The paint is different, either more colors are available, and/or just using different color palettes.

And in some cases, it seems that the animators are better able to match colors used in computer graphics much better with actual paint in a cel. Example, in Vandread when Kibiki is sitting by a little pond in the garden of the ship's bridge, it is not so easy to see where CG ends, and paint begins.

Another example of color being different than before is from Paranoia Agent. There are a few anime that seem to use the same basic color palette. The colors seem muted, and almost monochrome. As I don't paiint cels, I am unsure of what term to call this. Witch Hunter Robin had somewhat the same style of color palette.

I would like your thoughts about this, and if someone could point out where the first example of these color palettes came from would be nice.

I'd say I definitely prefer the smoother more colorful, and vibrant look of the modern computer ajusted anime as opposed to the hand painted technique myself. I'm not picky and I'd watch either but I just think it looks more visually appealing.

The thing I like best in using a computer, is that it can really smooth out the motions. Less guess, more math.

Also, in watching Vandread this week, I think that paint can't match a computer for space battles. You have to paint black, whereas a computer has to output nothing to get the color black. PLus it helps keep in mind things like which way is down, and where the light source is even when engaged in aerial combat manuevers.

Does anyone know if somehow anime companies were offered more choices in colors in the past few years, or if there is some other mechanism, that changed anime?

The first time I noticed a different color palette was when Megazone 23 part II was released. The show had so many greys and muted colors. I remember when Umetsu later did his clip Presence in Robot Carnival. I was so glad he kept that unique visual style. You can even see it in the second Zeta Gundam credits that he worked on. I believe this was the birth of he "muted" color scheme which avoided primary colors but it was an oddity until the late 90s. Before Umetsu Amano's Angel Egg and Rin Taro would occasionally use monochrome styles but they lacked the really wide range of pastel brownish greys that Umetsu used. Yasuhiko's Venus Wars film had a really nice Earthy color scheme which reflected his painting style from the 70s and 80s. I suppose the style isn't really new, just moce common now.
