I've been searching a long time for the Japanese school bell sound, a chime sound, which we're very familiar with. It's played in many Anime.
The only thing I could find was a half size lenght sound and it has background noises (people talking, etc) in it.

Does anyone know where I cand find a wav. or mp3. file for a better version of this? Longer or just the bell sound.

PS: Please don't delete this topic, it's Anime-related.

No it's not, that chime plays everywhere in the world, not just Japan. However, I'm sure it won't be that hard for someone else to find it for you, so I'll leave this thread open a little longer.

I didn't write it wasn't played in other places apart from Japan or Anime. Smile
I live in Brazil and I heard the sound as a catholic church bell in the city I live. In fact, it was the main reason to remember I wanted to download it.
I even asked some people here where I could find the "church bell sound" on the Internet but I had no luck. Razz

But as the sound is so often heard on Anime I thought there would be no problem to post this... Hearing it on Anime is the reason that made me like the chime. And thank you for not deleting the topic immediately.

I try to be helpful. Here's the best I could find, however.

Why not find an anime with that chime sound and record it on your computer? There should be times when the chime sounds without background noise or chatter.

The Japanese school bells you hear in so many anime are Westminster Chimes, I do believe. (And I'd be curious to know how that ended up as the standard for Japanese school bells, since it's clearly not Japanese in origin, but that's a topic for another day.) Do a search on that, I'm sure you'll come up with something.

Seconded. Key is almost 100% correct. "Westminster Quarters," to be exact.

Not only Japanese but most East Asian schools and wherever a public bell tower locates, I'd say.

Just Google "Westminster Quarters" and you'll get tons of MIDI / short MP3 files of the famous chime.

Well, now, this is a red-letter day. I can honestly say that I've learned something completely new to me. Thanks, dormcat.

Quite correct, however if one was to visit Westminister, London, W1 today one will not hear these chimes as they are presently undergoing renovation and are silent until sometime in July. Only the larger bongs counting the hours is heard until then. I believe this melody was assimilated into the Japanese school system at about the same time as they assimilated the 19th Century British naval uniform as a school uniform to try and emulate the British Empire, the pinnicle of Western civilisation then during Japan's agressive modernisation era of that time.

Thanks for searching, -gecko-. Thanks everyone else who helped providing information for the chime origins. I was able to do a more accurate search, and I found it.

Here are these chime versions which sound more like most that are featured on Anime:

http://www.champsclock.com/download/largewes.mp3
http://www.billib.co.uk/content/sounds/westminstermp3.mp3
http://www.toaelectronics.com/downloads/samples/Westminster_Chime.mp3

And Zalis116, the only software for audio capture I have is River Past wich I used a lot. But since I installed the new Windows XP version my audio driver is all messed up. Even my Windows Media Player no longer works. So there is no way I can capture the sound.

Oh, I should have mentioned that in Ghost Stories, if you watch it with the "dubtitle" track on (subtitles that follow the comedy dub and have added things for sound effects such as "Keiichirou Sob (tm)"), you'll see "Westminster Chimes" displayed every time the school bells ring.
