YEAH!! Wow, there are so many exciting things being announced this week. This is definitely one of the ones I'm most looking forward to; I love love love Ikuhara's stuff and can't wait to see what he's going to do next!!

We're talking about the director of Utena here! (Plus some bits in Penguindrum!) Ikuhara's joked before about hating to write about het relationships because "I feel irritated to see my girl getting together with some other guy", but in all seriousness it's no secret that he has a real fascination with same-sex desire in his storytelling. That is, he employs "yuri" stuff because that's what he's always been interested in writing about, not because he's suddenly "sold out"! |

Lesbian Bear Storm might just give My little sister cant be this cute as the anime with the greatest title of all time. So naturally Aniplex will no doubt release it as YuKuAr
Hopefully the first episodes has the Lesbian Bear (for lack of a better name) sing an "I want" song entirely through bear growls. |

Knowing Ikuhara, the story would still be very fascinating past the basic concept. Like with Utena, once you get past the UtenaXAnthy stuff, the show really does hold an interest, and there's much more to it. Actually, their relationship in the TV series is pretty tame compared to the movie (comparatively, it's more of a friendship/partnership than the heavy romantic relationship in the movie).

I definitely agree with you, PurpleWarrior13-- Utena is one of those series that I get more out of every time I see it! When I first watched it years ago, the gender/sexuality stuff was what made the biggest impression on me; watching it last year with the Nozomi release, it was the examination of eternity, memory and growing up that really spoke to me! It's like a different show every time you revisit it. There's so much going on.
I've only been through Penguindrum once so far, but I'm looking forward to seeing if it's a work that matures with time, like Utena. Though homoerotic tension is one of the things that Ikuhara does really well, so even if he decides to make a show that is JUST that, it could still end up being really good... |
