Scott Pilgrim Volume 3 just came out, and to all of you interested in doing "manga styled"/OEL/orwhateverthebuzzword of the day is for the comics done in the manga style, should read it. Its shows how an artist can take manga influence and make it a) his own style b) adapt it to a foreign culture (in this case the Toronto indie hipster scene) c) make it a fun highly addictive work in the vein of Ranma 1/2 that doesn't become too repetitive and is far more intelligent than anything Rumiko Takashi has ever written.
What makes Scott Pilgrim so fun is how it effortlessly blends the realistic/geniune character studies of alternative american drama comics (e.g for the two of you who read them, Box Office Poison) with the addictive quality the best mainstream manga have. The combination makes for a breathtakingly awsomely fun read, best served when listening to some of the music that author O'Malley suggests at the end of the book. Anyways those are my all too brief undeveloped thoughts: how about yours? |

Best line ever. I recommneded Scott Pilgrim on the American comicbook thread, and I'll recommend it again. I couldn't have described it's appeal better. |
