My favorite movie (or was that P2?) gets reviewed! ^_^; I bought the P1 boxed version, but my sound system doesn't go beyond Dolby ProLogic. ;_; Until I upgrade my receiver later this year, I'm definitely missing something from this Renewal release.
A few nitpicks/corrections about the review...
Quote: | Patlabor: The Movie, the first of three, came out in 1989 when the TV series was at the height of its popularity[...] |
In the Archives book from the set, the release timeline states that the movie came out _before_ the TV series aired (July 15, 1989 for the movie, and the first TV episode aired on October 11). I'm sure that the TV series was most popular after it started broadcast. ^_^;
The other correction:
Quote: | This Limited Edition comes in a collector’s tin[...] |
Unless you got an über-deluxe version of the LE set, there isn't any tin anywhere in the vicinity (unless I place it next to Akira, Appleseed or the GitS:SAC DTS releases). The box is cardboard with a chrome-like paper, the DVDs are in a cardboard/plastic digipak, and cover of the storyboards book is paper in a brushed-metal finish. No tin. ^_^
I can't wait for the P2 set next month (it'll go alongside my R2 release quite nicely)...

Also the reviewer failed to notice that the 5.1 track is re-recorded so dialogue, music placement etc is different.
The original 2.0 track from 1989 is missing which is the biggest disapointment with this dvd release.
Also as Ingraman stated above, the Movie came out before the first episode of the TV series had even aired but after the OVA series had finished.

I've spoken with Ingraman offline, and it appears that my confusion over the release date had to do with the release date of the laserdisc version, not the theatrical release. (One of the extras on the second disk talks about the release coming during the TV series.) That and the thing about the box have been modified in the review.
As for the thing about the 5.1 track? I did note that the movie had been redubbed. I never saw any information indicating that the 5.1 track had been rerecorded beyond that, however. (If it was in the boxed set information then that's why, since I didn't have the book extras available for review.)

The older MANGA ENT VHS dub was soooo much better.
Dialogue, voice tone, was perfect, One of the best Dubs ever (Ota's original english voice rocked! "God-damned thing just wont lie down!"). This new dub and rerranged dialogue will take getting used to.
However I am happy that the DVD had comeout finally...

I haven't tried the new dub, yet, since the original Japanese voices are perfect. It also helps that Sakakibara Yoshiko (Nagumo Shinobu's seiyuu) is one of my favorites. ^_^;
Still, how good can the Manga dub be when they screwed up lines that were in english to start with!?! (Kanuka passing through passport control at the airport) One of the best lines of the movie was ruined... ;_; Overall, I thought that the Manga dub was mostly acceptable, but not great.

I'll agree with that sentence, and I am _really_ looking forward to the LE release of P2 next month. ^_^

I had no idea they had messed up lines, I have only seen the Manga dub till now and thats only because it was shown on tv many years ago (which I taped, also got movie 2). Unlike most english dubs, the patlabor movies, and some other anime series's (Record of Lodoss War, Macross/Robotech, Transformers, Evangelion, RahXephon, The OLD Guyver anime dubs etc.) were very good, english dubs (like patlabor the new files *shudder*, Gundam Seed/Seed Destiny) are mostly passable to downright BAD...
I too look forward to the 2nd movie rerelease (though not the LE ver, standard one will do just fine), even though I thought the first movie was superior (based on the Manga dubs though), interms of plot.

Personally I too had liked the Manga dubs, though the subs were the best. The Manga film dubs were much better cast than the other Patlabor dubs. I liked Gotoh equally in them.
Though I agree that it was messed up that they screwed up the Kanuka line.
dub: Airport Clerk - "Occupation?"
Kanuka - "Labor Pilot."
sub: Airport Clerk - "Business or pleasure?"
Kanuka - "Combat."
Shame they never think to include original stereo tracks on these things. I like having the audio as it was originally presented.

I do not like the CPM Patlabor dubs. I'm kinda indifferent to the Manga dubs, but they're decent. I thought that the Bandai dub wasn't too bad, either, since the most of the voice actors sound similar to their Japanese counterparts (although Kanuka's english voice grates on my ears). For me to really enjoy Patlabor, the Japanese voices are a must-have; I've known and enjoyed them for more than 10 years, and I just put up with the english dubs when I have to...

I'll listen to the Japanese audio again tonight, but doesn't the passport control/immigration guy just ask "Sightseeing?" in english (to which Kanuka gives her "Combat" reply)? Maybe it was changed in the Japanese redub? Now I really have to rewatch that segment... ^_^
Edit: Okay, yeah, I was remembering correctly, and they kept the original Japanese lines in the new Japanese audio.. The dub/sub that you mention above, are actually dub v1 and dub v2, aren't they? Your 'sub' dialogue seems to match what I remember hearing from the new dub a couple of nights ago...

To be honest, I was going on memory. I only have the dub tape sadly. Still, I got the gist of it.

Did they redub it with the older actors or is it a completely different cast?
If it's in the style of the new Macross I'll pass. Why bother to redub it if you're not even gonna put enough effort to make it better than the original. Waste of time and money.

Japanese = Same cast, new voicing/recording
English = New cast, different translation

Which is what?

Make it better? I haven't heard it. What was wrong with it? Macross hadn't been dubbed before as Macross (not Robotech), had it?

Nope, it's an entirely brand new release by a new company...
Hmm... It is new video, isn't it? I haven't looked at the old Manga release in quite a while.
Well, it's got new English and Japanese audio, 'new' extras if you buy the LE (which were on the original Japanese LD release), and beautiful new packaging (although I do prefer the standard-edition cover art to the LE DVD cover art).
