Sorry to say, but this is another suggestion topic.
My librarian asked my to give her a title for the first manga series ever in the school library. I was hoping that someone could give a me good title. But before you write down your favorite series, please read the guidelines below. Here are the guidelines for manga suggestions: 1)The manga will be for both Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers, so appropriate subject manners 2)Not to much violence and bloodshed 3)Not to much sexuality shown by the characters 4)No nudity Some titles that are absolutely not allowed: Sensual Phrase, Full Moon, Chobits, Tokyo Babylon, or any other series that have similar topics. The series I was thinking of was The Prince of Tennis, but I was hoping that some of you could help me out. Thank you very much!!! |

Tokyopop has listings by age rating on their site. Might be helpful. I'd also think anything from Viz's Shonen Jump line, but I'm not sure how much violence would be too much.

Wow, I really envy you, having the honor to recommend the very first manga series for your library! You might need something not only welcomed by students but by librarians and teachers as well. Thus I recommend my avatar: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, for following reasons:
The only possible concern is its blood: not gory, but not minimal either, especially during spoiler[Kushana being captured by immortal soldiers]. |

Congratulations!! Wanirose, you're sooo lucky!
![]() Cardcaptor Sakura, Clamp School Detectives & Man of Many Faces. I was going to suggest Marmalade Boy & Suki, but the POWERS THAT BE might not like storylines with Teachers in "relationships" with students. **Can't exactly blame them, these days** I would also suggest Magic Knight Rayearth & DNAngel, again that might be an iffy titles, but they're still good ones. Darn, I thought this thread would be an easy. But looking at my collection...I guess not. Still, Congrats! ![]() ***Wow! Is this really my 500th post? Who'da thunk it?! I didn't think that I would post this much, but I very glad that I'm here!*** |

I reccomend Saint Tail, all the way! I think it's the perfect choice for this catagory. It's magical girl series that, a) isn't too cutesy for the older readers, b) for once, has very little/no homosexual undertones, c) and has a somewhat deep theme - is stealing all right if you're stealing from a theif and giving back to the victims? Pretty much devoid of any sexual content or harsh violence.
And whoever mentioned Cardcaptor Sakura, I second that. I'll throw Angelic Layer out there as well, cute series that's absolutely harmless and might appeal a bit more to boys, as opposed to the girl-oriented titles I've been mentioning. I'll also reccomend Someday's Dreamers, a cute coming-of-age story involving magic users in present-day Tokyo. |

I thought the same thing when I told my librarian I would give her a title. That night I went home and started looking through my collection. Needless to say, I didn't find that many that were suitable. I had thought about Marmalade Boy and Suki too, but I don't think that a lot of students would particularly like them. I actually really liked Suki though. The thing is that I really want the series to appeal to a lot of the students, so that they would be more open to different manga series. Haru to Ashura wrote:
I actually just finished reading that series, and to tell you the truth, that wasn't the first manga that came to mind. I haven't read Saint Tail, but I will definately check it out the next time I go to Borders! I was also going to try and get the librarian to buy a copy of Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle (probably Spirited Away) for the library collection too. But I have to talk to her about that. In the mean time, does anyone else have any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate any help from anyone! Also, thank you to everyone who has helped so far! |

Azumanga Daioh might be a good choice, it's rather different from most manga, seeing that it's a four panel comic strip, but that might give it more appeal to certain people.
Another good one, though it does deal with some more mature subjects but in a not too heavy-handed or inappropriate way, would be Imadoki. |

I don't know if Eyeshield will work in a school library only because of the idea of a student threatening people with guns might not go to well with parents. Now that I think about it not many manga would be good for a school library with those guidelines.

Wait...This is a middle school/high school library and you can't have nudity? What the hell?!?
Anyways, Death Note and Monster. |

zzzWtf? Um, Yeah, duh. Do parents want their 13 year old sons looking at boobs? The polls are closed and votes are in: No, no they do not. |

The boy's parents are lesbians. This might not be very appropriate for a school. I'm suprised no one's said Fruits Basket yet. It's pretty much universally loved by teenage girls here in America. I'd also reccomend Kamichama Karin and Sugar Sugar Rune; both are cute magical girl stories with no trace of implied nudity during transformation sequences. I would've also said Tokyo Mew Mew, but it fails the nudity rule. |

Aww man, you beat me to it! I was also going to recommend Fruits Basket, because there's really no blood to it and it's basically a good humored drama that sees people growing up.
Course people are sometimes naked in FB too ![]() |

I would agree with Cardcaptor Sakura too, but there are homosexual themes in it. I don't think they ever kiss or anything, but it's there. I don't know if you could pass it off at two male friends being best friends or not, seeing as I haven't read all of the manga. Then there's all the other relationships, like Ruka's and their teacher, Syaoran & Sakura both crushing on Yukito, Tomoyo's onesided infatuation with Sakura, to name a few. But Tokyopop does label it 'A' for all ages. Perhaps if the people don't know/think about shounen ai or that a student could like their teacher, they won't see it there. When I read it, I went into it knowing that those relationships were there, so subconsciously, I was probably picking up all the details here and there and such. Maybe in ignorance, you don't/won't see it. *shrugs* I also wanted to suggest MKR earlier, but I've seen the anime more recently than the manga, so my memory of the manga is kind of fuzzy. I'm not sure about their transformation scenes. They rarely transform in the anime, heck, the openings had more nudity than the actual show solely because they transformed in the openings. I'm pretty sure there was blood in it and unless they completely changed the end of the first 'season' there is spoiler[character death... to save the world, the knights have to kill the 'leader' who summoned them to save the world in the first place.] But I know the ultimate ending to the story is spoiler[different (better, imo) than the anime. No one dies, and they get to make the world a better place, all their friends are around, and they come visit them. Everything is mostly tied up.] Tokyopop seems to label this one 'Y' for Youth 10+. I see you and a couple other suggest Prince of Tennis. I also realize that many titles that have been suggested have girls as the main characters. When thinking about it, a lot of shonen action titles do seem to have blood and violence. While I personally have not read it (yet), what about Hikaru no Go? |
