For people, is the information type "Hometown" supposed to be the person's place of birth, or place of residence?
Also, is it possible for the entering contributor to italicize text in "Trivia", "DVD Easter Eggs" and similar information types (to, for example, indicate a title)? What about inline linking (I'd like to clean up my entries in Wife Eater's Trivia page)? |

For me, hometown is residence, too.
I also made the suggestion to have an option "place of birth" (eventually in the same field as date of birth, although this would prevent entering them separately), but somehow, my suggestion was deleted (something with double entries, which is not my style, but at least they could have kept the content of the post). |

In most cases, you can enter both "birthplace" and "current residence" as a person's hometown. Just indicate the difference of one from the other. Take this entry for Mari Iijima, for example:

Thank you very much. One additional question : are multiple inputs possible ? I mean, suppose I enter "hometown : Tokyo (birthplace)", can somebody else make another "hometown" entry for the current residence? |

Right now, only one entry is allowed, so you'll have to cram in both birthplace and hometown in one line if possible. |

This questions has been asked before, and it's really a matter of semantics. What does hometown mean to you? I feel that "hometown" is more appropriate to describe the place where one grew up, as opposed to simply one's current place of residence. In a way it gives a hint as to what kind of person you are. Someone who grew up in a small town and currently living in New York is likely to have quite a different outlook on life compared to a person who lived all his life in NYC. I was born in Vanier, grew up in St-Hilaire, and moved out when I was 20. I would hardly describe Vanier as my hometown since I don't remember anything about it, and when occasionally I visit St-Hilaire it feels like "going back to my hometown" even though I haven't lived there in 8 years.

Generally speaking you should never let people enter arbitrary markup in a public database because then they can put in dangerous/undesirable tags like <script> or <meta> or <iframe>. Also, people might forget to close an italic tag, with the result that the rest of the page gets italicized. Also, if links are added there is a risk of link rot, as evidenced by "official websites" and "links". Also, markup interferes with the basic searching/sorting functions of a database; someone searching for "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" would draw up a blank if the database contains "Higurashi no <font color=red>Na</font>ku Koro ni". Also, because the Encyclopedia is geared towards factual "bits of data", it's better to have formatting-agnostic data so that appropriate formatting can be applied depending on the context; e.g. bold for licensed and italic for alternative title wouldn't work if the title was already bolded or italicized. For all those reasons, only staff are allowed to use html markup because it's assumed they know what they're doing... although sometimes I see evidence to the contrary 
The main reason to use formatting is for comment-like data such as trivia or easter eggs; in those cases the Encyclopedia serves as a limited wiki so it would make sense to use formatting. |
