There's a Japanese band called Envy that I keep hearing about. They're more true to real emo, not the nu-emo crap that's going around these days. I assume, though, that the nu-emo crap is what you're looking for. Here's Envy anyway.

I think High and Might Color would fit in. Not sure though but from reading the translated lyrics of "Ichirin No Hana" I would say they are plus from the music video they do have an emo image.

How has Plastic Tree not been mentioned? Ryutaro is emo personafied. Some of their music is light, some of it is heavy, but it's all melodramatic and depressing/weepy/sad.

HIGH AND MIGHTY COLOR isn't emo. I'm not sure how classify them, but emo isn't it.

Two bones to pick:

One, Envy is WAY heavier than any mainstream emo/screamo band. They would take Thursday, Saves the Day, The Used and all the rest out behind the woodshed for a good whoopin'. They are metal; chaotic, frenzied noise along the lines of Botch, Beecher, or Converge.

Two, I think that High and Mighty Color are about the closest thing to screamo you're going to find in mainstream Japanese music. My buddy in Nagoya came up with the term "idolcore" to describe them, and I think it fits pretty well. They're a lot more poppy than most American screamo bands, however.

I dunno...do you think visual bands qualify as emo? They're moody, but I'm not sure the music has the requisite tension. Tough question to answer.

And Envy is much more true to real emo than any of the other bands mentioned. They are not metal at all.

See, I disagree. I'm pretty sure emo started out as an offshoot of plain ol' indie rock, and Envy's songs are a lot heavier than that. Just to make sure I wasn't totally on crack, I listened to what I do have from them (A Dead Stinking Story and one of the splits they did with Iscariote), and I wasn't reminded too much of Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard Confessional or Alcohol Funnycar.

Maybe they're not metal like Slayer, Lamb of God or even Trivium, but I don't think they're just emo, either.

However, my vote goes for Nature Living. Those guys are pretty good!

Emo started out as an offshoot of DC hardcore in the 1980s. See http://www.fourfa.com for more information.

one3rd is right. emotional hardcore (emo) started out from the dc hardcore scene. If you wanted to hear some real emo check out the Rites of Spring, I think you will be surprised that it sounds nothing like what is considered to be emo these days.

Envy is great, check them out.

Damn, I hate being wrong. But I hate spreading ignorance even more, so thanks! I suspect my opinion was formed because we Seattleites think that all forms of non-mainstream music started here. Razz

I'm sticking by my guns on Envy, though, 'because they rock hard. Maybe we can compromise and call them "emotional metalcore" or something.

No, we can't call them any kind of metalcore because there's no metal in their music.
