It's a shame the print version disappeared. I liked it. I'd sometimes peruse it for fun. I hope someday they bring it back.

I can remember buying the first US Shonen Jump issue after one of my sons brought it to me and said "Look Dad, Dragon Ball!" Those boys knew ( and know ) how to push Dad's buttons. I was already a Dragon Ball fan from seeing it on CN, so it was an easy sell.
We kept a subscription running until about 2008 when life got just too busy for all of us. Good memories, good times indeed. Ya' done good Jason. Mark Gosdin |

I remember way back when I was in fifth grade when I was called to the office and received and issue of jump in a large business envelope. This quite a bit before I was into anime so I had now Idea what the heck was going on in any of the series. I only vaguely remember a bit of one piece where at the time I saw the most confusing but oddly engaging fight scene in my life (Sanji vs. Mr. 2) and a bit of Yu Yu Hakusho where apparently the chapter black saga had ended and Yuuske was beginning to question what his new power was and all that. To this day I haven't the slightest idea why I got the magazine and I even lost it, but to think around 3 years or so later I would start taking these manga series as the most amazing thing that mankind has ever created... this article reminded me of that...and to put money aside for the now up to date Shonen Jump digital anthology...

I've lost count of the number of years I've been subscribing to Shonen Jump (it's been at least seven years possibly more) and I'm still subscribing today. It was what brought me into anime and manga. I still have several years worth of the print magazine. I was really excited when the magazine went simultaneous with the Japanese version this past week! They really seem to be off to a good start with One-Punch Man and the new Toriyama one-shot.

I remember that preview issue! Saw it sitting on a rack in my local comic store featuring a bunch of familiar series. I ended up getting SJ for I think about 3 years, and then just decided to go tankouban-only. Still fun while it lasted! The freebie Yu-Gi-Oh! cards had some neat designs on them, and sometimes they gave out failed TCG cards like from Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho, and DBZ.

The American Jump skewed too young at a time in my life (15) when I was craving more "mature" fare in the obnoxious way that teenagers are wont to do. If you'd been able to throw some of the sexy hijinks series in there you'd have captured my attention. On the other hand, I had an Animerica Extra subscription and I loved it, outside of the weird half-chapter publishing.

I subscribed for a year after reading the 7th and 8th issues pulled off of grocery store racks. I only stopped because my dad forgot to renew the subscription, and by that point, a couple of my favorite series were taken out of the magazine (including DBZ), and I wasn't quite as motivated to push my dad to get a new subscription.
I don't blame the shutdown of (the print version of) Shonen Jump entirely on scanlations. They certainly didn't help, but America's interest in manga had waned quite a bit since 2002, mixed with new technology (that's more economic to produce for the current market demographic) squeezing it's way in. I buy all my Shonen Jump manga in print form (volumes). I don't like the idea of everything going digital just because it is cheaper and more easily accessible. If they stop printing manga in the US, then I better learn Japanese and import some tankōbon.
"Toriyamaworld was so cooperative, it seemed for awhile that scanlation wouldn't be a problem. But they were just one site, and soon after they left, the scans market was taken over by sites like Narutofan that had no interest in promoting some abstract idea of "the manga industry", let alone Viz or Jump, at no benefit to themselves." The people at NarutoFan are a bunch of crooks. The one time I visited their site back in 2006, they were actually trying to sell subscriptions to read their scanlated manga on their site for their own gain. |

Interesting retrospective. For years I've always wanted to read Jump. But there were a couple problems. For one. I'm not particularly a fan of typical Shonen manga. I've always dreamed of a manga anthology that was more in line with mature material. But alas.
That being said, as of this week I will be getting Weekly Shonen Jump regularly. I've recently made a big push to started reading all my comics digitally (on my iPad) and I'm always looking for new material. The current digital only format really appeals to me. Also the fact that its weekly. Love weekly comics. Then there is the fact that its only a dollar an issue, for nearly 200 pages. That's an insane deal. As it currently stands I'm only really interested in the new strip One-Punch Man. And I'm marginally interested in One Piece and Toriko. But even then.... It's just a dollar (and less if you subscribe) |

I think part of the reason why Shounen Jump did not do as well is because the US version never bothered to offer the same promotions and omake that the Japanese version does. Even if US SJ were unable to offer the sketches that Japanese SJ fans can enter to win, they could have imported the posters and other tchotkes and justified a higher price for their issues with the addition of these items.

I remember the early volumes of Dragon Ball having full frontal male and female nudity. It was great! How did you guys get away with that? And rate it "A" for all ages?

When I was a junior in highschool, around 2004, I got braces and my orthodontist had Shonen Jump. Never had a subscription or bought a copy myself though. |
