Not bad, designwise. Very loose. It's got all the fanservice deserving of a 'Top Cow' product. Though, I'm not totally familiar with the series myself but I'll check this out.
I wonder how the folks at 'Top Cow' are handling the fact that one of their brainchildren has been animated. And not just animated made an "anime" by one of the top animation studios. |

I'll settle for raws and a fairly decent *blog* review. Besides, it has a high rate of being licensed. Not that it's ever stopped various groups before.
I had a chance to stop over at a few forums to read some discussions on what some have seen or images acquired. I have to admit some were pretty funny. The bottom line is that it's 'Witchblade' nuff said. 'Gonzo' can try and give it a decent storyline second while handing out all the "wet-your-pants" candy first. |

I really liked it when Turner, Christina Z and Tan were on board. I think they need someone who can breathe new life into it. I'm sure the digisubbers will grab this one, even though it has license me all over it. I'll just watch it unsubbed. For those who are not aware of the story: The original story is about a police detective named Sara Pezzini who is the latest in a long line of women to wield the gauntlet known as the Witchblade. It starts out with Pezzini and her Partner, Michael Yee investigating some sort of meeting of mobsters. However, it was a contest to see who will wear the Witchblade. It turns out that every person who put it on, got their hand blown off. All of a sudden, Sara and her partner covers are blown... Yee gets shot and Sara jumps in the line of fire and is mortally wounded. The Witchblade saves her and she is now its rightful wielder for now. About the Witchblade: It is a collective and its origins are unkown. It selects the strongest woman to wield it for a generation, but the woman must possess a very strong psyche to wield it because she shares her mind with it. If the bearer is of weak mind, the Witchblade can overpower the bearer or will judge and leave. It can change its shape into stabbing objects such as swords, flying daggers, spears, tentacles, etc... In addition to that, become body armor, it also has healing abilities and it can fire powerful bolts of energy and it adapts to its surroundings. Looks better than Ladydeath, but doesn't look anything like the comic. Oh well, Gonzo ruined Hellsing, too, from what I hear...

I think it was in a past issue of Anime Insider that there was a possibility that the anime does share the same continuity as the comic--that Masane is a successor to Sara, but maybe not the immediate successor (I believe the anime is set in the early 22nd-Century).
In past issues of the comic, it's been suggested that the Witchblade changes/evolves with each new wielder, so it's technically possible that in its new incarnation it may indeed transform its chosen host slightly when it goes into battle. Being a Witchblade fan from the very beginning, I'm definitely waiting for this to come stateside... |

In recent issues of the comic the origins of the Witchblade were "explained" its supposedly male and the "offspring" of the Angelus and the Darkness and described as the balance...I think... I'm not around my comics at the moment. Supposedly Top Cow is behind this forray into anime and views it as a way to bring the Top Cow Universe to Japan and a more worldwide audience

They should just commission a Tomb Raider anime and let the people who did Goldenboy animate it.

Witchblade as an anime...very interesting. I've only seen pics of the comic and I think when I was young I might have read some of it but I can't remember. I did see the http://www2.warnerbros.com/web/witchblade/home.jsp]Witchblade series on TNT and it was fantastic! But they stopped it and it was getting so good too. My fav. char. in the show is Ian Nottingham! He's gorgeous and a kick ass character! I wonder if he'll be in the anime.
EDIT: I just saw the trailer (kept stopping so didn't really enjoy it) and I don't see who these people are (obviously Ian won't be in there). I mean is the main char. Sara Pezzini in there and if so which one? And who's the kid? I'm going to assume that these are completely diff. characters from a diff. generation that are either before Sara or after Sara (if that girl with the yellow top and big chest is supposed to be her .....they could of done a better job with her hair and face...she looks to innocent ....well I don't know but from the pics I've seen of the comic she looks much more mature and copish). Well I guess we'll soon find out. |

That is not the actual origin; it has yet to explain if the gauntlet, the Darkness or the Angelus is indigenous or alien. In the earlier Darkness issues, it all ready mentioned there was a connection between the three. Moreover, described it as the balance. Now the Witchblade suppose to be male and how does the Angelus play into this role? The comic never mentioned the Angelus except in the Darkness crossover nor explained anything about the Angelus. Speaking of the Darkness, in 1/2 issue, I thought the Angelus was created to satisfy the sexual desire since the host cannot have a human. In the beginning, it suggested that the Witchblade was a collective. Furthermore, that it existed for centuries and there were many wielders as told in "Witchblade" and in "Tales of the Witchblade". The inconsistency of the storyline bothers me and I believe is one of the main reasons the comic isn't as popular nowadays. I've been reading Silverstri's "Hunter Killer", it's interesting. |

Actually, Witchblade has been experiencing something a resurgence in popularity of late, thanks to its current writer, Ron Marz. It's also approaching its 100th issue in a few months... Long story short is that it was recently revealed that the Witchblade is indeed male--hence its inclination for scantily-clad women --but it is also part of a trinity "and maintains the peace between shadow and radiance." While it's not entirely clear, issue #92 suggested that the Witchblade was created by in prehistoric times by ancient versions of the Darkness and the Angelus and that the first wielder was a cavewoman ala Raquel Welch... |
