I almost finished Azumanga Daioh.
In the beginning it was quite fun but now almost at the end i think it's quite boring.
I mean there is no big story line or character build up.
Sometimes it has good humour but now it''s getting boring.
My quistion is why is this such a high ranked (Rated) Anime?

When AD came out it was the first of it's kind. Random situational humor with no real plot. Now there's a lot more of that in anime, but it was somewhat groundbreaking when it first came out.

To explain the "lack of plot," Azumanga Daioh is considered a slice-of-life / comedy anime. How many crazy or amazing things actually happen to people in real life? The point is to follow the lives of a group of "ordinary" girls with very different personalities through high school and all of the (funny) things that happen to them during their time together. I thought the narrating was very well done and enjoyed the comedy from start to finish. It's true that there isn't much character build-up since the story revolves around high school and their times spent together, but it would be awkward and unfitting if it went into depth about each of their backgrounds. We got to know each of their distinct personalities in and out through their contributions to the conversations and action, and I think that served the series well.

Actually I thought Azumanga Daioh had a great ending. The great thing about the series is it makes the mundane, everyday rigamaroll of life exciting and Mr. Azuma seems to have a knack for it (refer to Yotsuba&). Anyway I don't think there needed to be any particular character build up. The characters are the way they are and as the series progresses you begin to get more and more attatched to them. The series also had many points where it wasn't particularly silly but just plain feel good. It told the story of high school friends, and well that's what happens when you graduate from high school. Everyone at least wants to keep in touch but they all go their seperate ways. It's a very sentimental thing and given how much the characters grow on you as the series progresses, it makes the ending all the more fitting.

I thought the show was great and remains one of my favorites. I assume you have the boxed set? I watched the individual volumes as they came out over the course of a year and I think that's the best way to watch a series. If you have the entire show, and watch it over the course of a week, I think you get sick of even the best anime. Maybe Azumanga just isn't to your taste and there's nothing wrong with it. I have problems with why Evangelion is so overrated, but almost everyone sees that as the show to end all shows. As for Azumanga, you have to think of it as more of a comic strip, like the Peanuts, instead of a regular anime with a culminating story arc.

Personally I was glad they didn't force some huge storyline. Alot of series are fun but then decide its time to be SERIOUS and just tack on a dramatic plot that doesn't fit well with the story. It's especially a problem with comedy shows.

If one must pigion-hole it, it's a slice-of-life series with a moe flavour. Pointless but fun.

Azumanga Daioh was greatness, I bought the thin-pak as well. The series was relaxing, funny, and charming. Loveable characters, random humor, great production values, why shouldn't it be rated highly?

Because people have different opinions and the vast majority of people who have their own personal positive opinions about the show outweighs your own personal opinion?

Most of you are forgetting one major reason there is a lack of continuing plot in the show. The reason is because, when released on tv in Japan, Azumanga aired every night for 5 minutes segments, and at the end of the week grouped them together for a 25 minute "episode." This is most likely the reason.

That explains a lot!
it did feel like the whole thing was put together like a comic strip compilation. Did they run the Manga similarly, in short strips?

Yes. The manga was a 4-panel strip like you might see in your daily newspaper, with the occasional special sequence done in normal manga style. Like when Osaka got the hiccoughs, that was a special.
As to its popularity, it's certainly found a niche in a fandom best known for big explosions or heart-wrenching love scenes. Sometimes people want a break from all that.

Even if you don't like it for the majority of the show, you will see that the ending is amazing. That's my opinion, at least. (I had tears in my eyes!)

I loved the show and the manga. Especially, the part of "the day in the life of Chiyo Chan" her thoughts about everyone was so funny. That type of anime was a good change from all of the other stuff, Princess TuTu it is not.
