Hilarious! I've heard Totoro compared to an owl or a rabbit or something, but a hamster is new.

This just begs for Hamtaro song AMVs.

We loved Hamtaro, and Totoro as well. I can well imagine what the NYT would call the catbus. Probably a cat-apillar. Wink

Taxonomy of the Totoro:

Order: Rodentia
Suborder: Myomorpha
Family: Totoridae
Sub-Family: Totorinae
Genus species: Megatotoro animatus (Totoro)

Well, what do you know? They are giant hamsters!

Doesn't look to me as though the Totoro has typical rodent dentition, the teeth are all pretty much identical, so no differentiated pair of incisors and no diastemae. The Catbus dentition is quite similar and not at all feline, so I would propose that the Catbus and the Totoro are quite closely related.

Glad I don't do the NYT, except formaybe a crossword puzzle or two. What would they call a black flying horse with incontinence? A stealth bomber? I disagree about using teeth to classify taxonomically. If so, then Bugs Bunny would be human, but with a severe need of orthodontia.

But seriously, has anyone researched mythical beasts of Japan, to see if there is a Totoro? Or would a Totoro be more along the lines of a god? A la nightwalker from Princess Mononoke? Both movies are Hiyao works, and he always seems to be putitng a god in them.

Thanks for the topic.

For a sec, I thought Charles Solomon was doing the review.

I always thought Totoro looked like a cross between a cat and a gerbil.
