Exactly how far does this series go? I have vol. 1 & 2 right now, but when I went to my store, it looks like they had 9 volumes plus a whole new series with new gate keepers. Something like a Gundam type of thing.

As are as I remember, there was 7 volumes of manga (The first two was released in English.), 8 volumes on DVD of the GateKeepers TV, and 2 DVDs for the GateKeepers 21 OVA Series. There is also GateKeepers game for the Playstation 1 that started it and GateKeepers '85 novel that was only released in Japan.

I emailed Tokyopop about this a long time ago and they told me 1 and 2 were the only ones ever made, even though on the website it had listed upto 7 (3-7 were not clickable though). Lying fiends!!
So why did Tokyopop not release them?? Bad sales I'm assuming?

Or maybe they were thinking it just wouldn't break through.

That and the manga series wasn't all that. Sure it had characters in the manga (which was also in the game) that never shown up in the anime series, but still, the manga felt, to me, alittle out of order.

I've wanted to check out this series for a very long time now. I used to watch GateKeepers 21 on TechTV a while back, and later found the 2 DVDs used for $10 each and I really like the series. I've just never really heard anyone talk about the first series, until now. Does the original surpass the sequal?

The TV series didn't get darker till the near the end of series, but other wise it's pretty decent. As far surpass, not really. 21 leaned more toward action, while TV had action, but it felt more like "Monster of the Day". But to really understand what's going on in 21, you'll have to the TV series. It's not a true must since 21 fills you in on the major info, but some of the smaller background stuff doesn't.
