I was bored and decided to re-watch this series recently, and I began wondering why people don't really talk about this series too much when the Gundam topic comes up. Personally, I thought it was a really good, albeit short, series with a good story and interesting characters. I specially liked the fact that the Zaku, my favorite mobile suit, had a huge part in the story. This was also the only Gundam I've seen where it feels like Zeon are the good guys, atleast up until the end. The Federation are always the good guys fighting the horrible Zeon forces. Yet this series shows there are two sides to every war, and each side has good people fighting for what they trully believe in.
This was no normal Gundam story, and I've seen a lot hate from people on these forums, yet I haven't heard why. The most current I can recall, sorry to use Kruszer as the example, was in the 3rd to the last post on page 1 of the Which Gundam topic. So the question is; Why do you like, or hate, Gundam 0080 War In The Pocket? |

I like it because the main protagonist is an innocent child who thinks war is a game in the beginning of the series and it shows how horrible war really is. I also liked the mobile suits in the 0080 like the Alex and the MS-18E Kämpfer. The Alex had it's cool extra set of armor and those vulcan guns on the arms while the Kampfer was the only mobile suit I've seen with a shotgun and the chain mine was just weird.

I like it because it's unlike most other Gundam series and tells a very focused, straightforward story with only a trio of main characters and with the background politics and "machinations" kept to a bare minimum.
It wasn't the first Gundam I had ever seen, that being Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory a couple of months before, but it's still a good "starter" series for getting into the Gundam franchise, because relatively little prior knowledge of the UC universe is needed to understand what's going on. In terms of stories of children facing the harsh realities of war, I actually far prefer Gundam 0080 to Grave of the Fireflies, which left me indifferent. I wrote a somewhat detailed review of Gundam 0080 a ocuple of years ago. The scoring format might be a little familiar, heh heh. |

I was really excited when 0080 first was released since it was going to be the first Gundam series without Amuro, Char, Noa or even Haro. It was also mentioned (in Animag) that their wasn't going to be any sound effects in space, which they decided against. It was also the first animated glimpse back to the One Year War. Ironically almost 20 years later I find myself longing for UC stories. I miss the continuity of characters that Gundam had in the 80s. I'm glad Sunrise is building a foundation for Gundam Seed and has gone back to early One Year War with Igloo, since I hated the unrelated Gundam series of the year trend of the 90s.

I know what you mean. For some reason I can't get into Gundam Seed. The only Gundams that interest me are those set in the UC century. I don't know if it was the fact I was watching Seed and Wing on Toonami being the reasons I couldn't really get into the shows, but there is just something about the UC century.

I dunno, I happen to like both UC and Gundam SEED. They both have good storylines and interesting plot-twists. I like to think that Gundam SEED is going to become th new UC, since they use a lot of material from UC.

Gundam 0080 was my first experience with the UC timeline of Gundam. While it isn't an all-time favorite of mine, it is definetly a very good series and one of the better Gundam series I've seen. I like how it's shorter and more to the point than the other shows. I also like how it focuses more on characterization than on the action and politictal themes. It was refreshing how it shows more of the civilian side of the war rather than focusing on the pilots and their battles so much and I couldn't help but cry myself along with Al at the end. Gundam 0080 isn't really a "wowing" series, but it's still an entertaining one and I think it's a good introduction to the UC timeline of Gundam.

I like most Gundam series, however, I did not like this one. I didn't really like any of the characters except for Chris, so it was kinda hard to enjoy myself or the storyline. I got the message the story was trying to portray and everything I just think it could have been done a lot better and have stupid little Al learn a lesson without the character death.

I don't think that the story would have had the impact, if the one particular character hadn't died and brought it home to Al that spoiler[war is not a game and people, sometimes even friends, die.] |

What is there not to like about War in the Pocket?
This was actually the first Gundam series I watched (my first exposure was "Gundam the Movie III"). While some of the plot twists were predictable and expected, it showed the war in a way that would not conform with the rest of the Gundam series, mainly: spoiler[The Federation as the "Bad Guys," the Protagonist as a civilian; a Female Gundam Pilot (I have not seen another woman pilot a Gundam - other Mobile Suits, yes, but no Gundam); a budding romance that ends with tragedy - and neither side knew who they were fighting.] And, of course, Megumi Hayashibara as Christine MacKenzie, data collection specialist and spoiler[RX-78NT Gundam Pilot]. Like I said, what's not to like? |

There have actually been a number of female Gundam pilots, although usually not in starring roles:
Sayla Mass (Gundam, First Gundam) Karen Joshua (Gundam [G], 08MST) Emma Sheen (Gundam Mk II, Zeta Gundam) Elle Viano (Gundam Mk II, Gundam ZZ) Roux Louka (Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ) Kayra Su (ReGZ -- not exactly a Gundam, but...kind of, CCA) Chan Agi (ReGZ, CCA) Marbet Fingerhat (Victory Gundam, Victory Gundam) Juca Meilasch (Victory Gundam, Victory Gundam) Allenby Beardsley (Nobel Gundam, G Gundam) Rain Mikamura (Devil Gundam, G Gundam) Sochie Heim (Turn A Gundam, Turn A Gundam) Merrybell Gadget (Turn A Gundam, Turn A Gundam) Cagalli Yula Attha (Strike Rouge, Gundam SEED & Destiny) Stellar Loussier (Gaia Gundam & Destroy Gundam, Destiny) And that's just a quick list off the top of my head, so I'm sure someone will step in with someone I forgot. Christina MacKenzie is the only woman to pilot the "main" Gundam in her show, which happens to be a show where the Gundam isn't even the focus, but there are still quite a few female Gundam pilots out there (and that's not even counting unanimated sidestories). Gundam most definitely isn't an equal opportunity employer here, but female Gundam pilots aren't unheard of. |

Also, I'm pretty sure I remember some UC sidestories featuring female Gundam pilots. For some reason Space, to the Edge of a Flash and Gundam Sentinel come to mind, but don't hold me to that (but then again, considering there were only about half a billion Z Plusses, there had to be at least one somewhere  ).
