I recentley noticed a disclaimer in front of an english (published by viz) death not graphic novel, that said some art had been altered form the original japanese. DOes anyone know if the Death Note manga has been altered at all while coming to the US?

Viz has been putting that disclaimer in most/all of their recent releases, if memory serves. It could refer to a number of things, but since Viz almost always translates all sound effects from Japanese into English it may just be referring to the art changes necessary for that translation.

The translation of sound effects sounds like a good reason. I was thinking it may have been because of the American graphic novels being different dimentions thant the Japanese tankouban and some of the edges being cut off as a result.

They've done so with varying levels of success. Translation is never a particularly easy thing, and no matter what format they choose to use someone is going to get frustrated and annoyed.

Overall I'm actually rather impressed by how well Viz has managed to incorporate the translated sound effects into the original artwork. It hasn't affected my enjoyment of the series I read, and since I'm one of those rather odd individuals who will regularly collect both the original Japanese volumes and the English translated volumes for series, if I really felt like checking something I could.

The dimension differences may also contribute to the statement that some of the artwork had been altered, although I would think that would be a negligible reason overall.

I just assumed Light was looking at porn and they cropped the nipples out. Maybe not...

There really isn't anything that would need to be edited in Death Note. The is nothing particularly graphic (that I read in the first 57 or so chapters) that would need editing. There wasn't a lick of nudity and the deaths were not gory.

The only reason I say this is because of the interference with the art. Most of the time it's actually good, but a few times, someone's been missing a clip of their hair or their entire hand. I'm not really concerned with the translations.

Ah man, Death Note's one of my favorite mangas. I'm going to have do some comparing later to see if anything got censored.

I too buy both the English and Japanese versions of some of my favourite manga and the sound effect translations usually don't bother me all that much. There have been a few times where the translations have taken away from the overall feel of a certain panel, but nothing so drastic that it is really worth complaining about. Plus I like the huge "doom" sound effect you see a lot.

I am bothered more by the dimension differences. I've seen some manga where they've cropped too much off of a page or two and it makes the images look awkward.

Anyway, I don’t think that anything was “censored” in Death Note. Just as everyone else has already said, I would think it’d deal with the translations or dimensions.
