Those who have seen my posts in the past know by now that I'm a humungous Go Nagai fan. Seriously, I think he's the greatest mangaka living today.

However, I also know that alot of his work doesn't neccessarily translate well to anime form. Stuff like Hanappe Bazooka (based on one of his famous gag manga) and Kama Sutra (based on one of his many hentai manga one shots) are the subjects of somewhat mixed reviews from anime critics and fans alike.

However, some of the anime that's based on his manga have become classics. Devilman, Mazinger Z, Cutey Honey are all considered classics of the art form.

So, I'd like to ask all of you, what is your favorite and least favorite anime based on Go Nagai's work?

I actually have two favorites of Go Nagai, the first being Devil Lady, where model Jun Fudo is a beastwoman who still retains her human conscience. Something about that. The other is Cutey Honey, where a shapely female android fights off mostly villainous female adversaries. Cool

My least favorite is Demon Lord Dante. I actually read about this and it sounded good, but once I got the first disc, I was extremely disappointed, even after the second disc. The plot moves along VERY slowly, and although there are good scenes in it, they are few and far between. I never got the entire collection, and may not even bother getting the rest... Mad

Mazinger Z - Has to be one of my least favorites. As much as I like Mecha, I just don't like that particular mecha gerne. I don't like the retro looks.

Cuty Honey - I like the magical girl gerne. However Cutey Honey is different as it more adult orientated in it's themes with how having to resort to hentia or toilet humor.

Kekko Karmen - Watch it for the shits and giggles value of it as the main character wears a mask. (and that is it). Some freinds and myself where watching the live action of this last week and we could not stop outselves laughing at it.

Mazinkaiser: Gotta give credit where credit's due. Anime wouldn't have robots if it wasn't for Mazinger Z, but unfortunatley I haven't seen Mazinger Z. However, this little OVA was a lot of fun to watch (and Mazinkaiser's just a monster). It's a great throwback to old school and it's all done in typical over the top Go Nagai style. Also I liked the bold linework in this series as well.

New Cutie Honey: This was my first exposure to Go Nagai. I remember my buddy found an old VHS tape of it and we decided to all watch it. I figured it would just be mediocre (his taste usually isn't the best). But lo and behold what do I get? The first scene is Akira Fudo jump kicking a woman in the head thus breaking her neck. And then she stands up! Also given what Akira says to her, I was blown back by how extreme it was. This was when anime was starting to get much softer, so seeing something like this was a bit of a shock. It's a magical girl (and I believe Cutie Honey was the first) series for guys. Once again the characters were likeable, it was wonderfully animated, and that opening was just great. Honey Flash!

Devilman: I'm very odd about this one. Haven't had the opportunity to read the manga, the 2 ep. OVA was ok, the TV series was more superhero-esque, Amon: Apocalypse Of Devilman was just akward (didn't care for it too much), and the live action was just bad. However I love the story/mythology behind Devilman. I think the only way to experience Devilman is through the manga. In a way it's the Spider-Man story, only turning Spider-Man into an anti-hero. Plus I was kinda sold on Devilman after my first experience with Akira in New Cutie Honey.
