Ok, so a long time ago I watched the first episode of Kenshin Seisohen (the 2nd OVA series). I was a little disappointed. And then I heard a lot of rather disparaging comments. So I got the impressions that it was another case of trying to cash in on a popular anime that resulted in a crappy sequel. But I figured I should at least see for myself, and tonight I rented the DVD.

I was blown away.

How come people are so negative about this Kenshin anime? It's an awesome ending to the series! It's perfect! It has just the right mood, it addresses just the right questions. It brings closure to Kenshin's unending quest for redemption. I think it's the best sense of closure I ever got for an anime! As far as I'm concerned, it's right up there with the Tsuiokuhen OVA. So why oh why are people whining about it???

hey, I liked the last Kenshin OVAs. Actually, I almost cried. And yes its does bring closure spoiler[not much more can happen once he dies] It esp. helped to tie in where the Series and the manga split and to show what happened after the series. Though I guess the ending is somewhat anti-climatic, compared to the rest of Kenshin.

I thought that the Seisohen OVA was rather disapointing. I agree that good questions were answered, but it just didn't draw me in. Maybe its because I didn't really like the animation style, but it just seemed too little too late. Its roughly the third arc of the manga crunched into what 2 hours? And half of that was recaps! Maybe if they had done a 6-13 episode mini-series and taken the time to tell a proper story I might have enjoyed it.
Just my two cents

No, it wasn't the third arc of the manga crunched into a hour, it was a simple flashback to the third arc, just like there were flashbacks to the 1st and 2nd story arcs. If it really was the whole third arc crunched into one hour, well, 1) that would be impossible and 2) if they had tried it would have been a mess. But they simply flashed back to select parts of that story, the parts relevant to Kenshin's quest for redemption. The more I think about it, the more I think a short OAV was the right idea. What would have they done with a 6-13 episode mini-series? Show Kenshin suffering though all those episodes? Of course, they could have shown the full 3rd story arc (and I would've loved that) but that wasn't the point of *this* story. This story was about spoiler[Kenshin & Kaoru's final stretch. Their last days. Their deaths. But mostly it was about Kenshin's need for redemption that simultaneously united him with Kaoru and separated him from her.]

I find a lot of the negativity comes from people who wanted just that, another cookie-cutter kenshin cash cow series (try saying that 5 times fast). They don't want an ending, they don't want closuer spoiler[they certainly don't want to see their hero die], they wanted more of the same. It's much better off this way, you get a nice clean ending and a great story with Enishi to bring more of a connection between Kenshin's haunting past and his troubled present. I wish more series ended this way, an OAV series that wraps up everything and ends spoiler[with the main character(s) dying]. Can't say I've ever been happier with a sad ending in my life.

The manga had better closure.
The Battousai was defanged and found peace as father, content to let others quest. In the parts before the epologue, he was dealing with the one thing he avoided since the restoration, Tomoe. He finally lived upto it and free himself and Enhasi from her. Besides, Enhasi is just cooler than heck.

Yes, Watsuki said that at AX 2002.

I thought i'd dig this subject back out because I just got done watching it for myself. I really liked it. I didn't find the animation style to be uninteresting at all. I also didn't find the recap to be all that disappointing.
It drags out all the memories of the series to lead into ending. It fitted the purpose flawlessly. You have to take into account that while kenshin maybe fresh on american minds it had been several years in japan between release right?

The fight scenes were great, I liked them better than the tv series fights, and they didn't even show all of em.

It was sad indeed
spoiler[when sano threw the cooked fish at kenshin and he didn't catch it, and the expression on sano's face! that started it for me.] From then until the end, I actually weeped like a girl. Crying or Very sad
I never cry, ever, but this was a tear jerker.
Although it would have been nice to have drawn the third arc out abit in a series. The oav nailed the premise of enichi's feelings and resolved them well enough.

All in all it was great.
Why did all the reviews talk badly about it?
