Very nice. I'll admit I didn't groove on the second season as much as I did the first, but this franchise is always welcome in my home. It'd be great if it got a physical release in NA. I'd buy it.

Unless I've forgotten something, I believe this is the only anime series to start last year and already has a 3rd season announced.

I think you are probably right about that. I certainly can't think of another example off the top of my head. I expect that Is This A Zombie might join the ranks in the not too distant future, but it hasn't yet.

Dog Days is not likely the only recent anime show to get an additional season. I expect both Bodacious Space Pirates and Yuru Yuri (the former based on a very popular light novel series and the latter based on an ongoing manga series) to get new seasons some time in 2013.
